Dear stakeholders,

Happy New Year!

It is that time of the year that we strategically define activities we want to accomplish in the year. As the AgriProFocus mandate dictates of bringing stakeholders together to be able to co-create and innovate, we hope to do the same for the livestock sector through the Nyama platform.

You were part of the results in 2015 and consequently Nyama platform was able to achieve the following;

• Carried out a successful campaign that lobbied and influenced Parliament to allocate 5bn shillings to the National Budget 2015/2016 for the purchase of vaccinations to control Foot and Mouth Disease

• Completed the beef sector map

• Mobilized 10 active organisations that now form the Nyama platform.

Based on these achievements, we wish to invite you to the planning of Nyama platform activities for 2016. The meeting will take place on Wednesday 27th Jan at AgriProFocus/SNV offices 10am- 12pm.

Just received this on Facebook...

"Very Sad indeed. Fellow Farmers I ventured in PIG FARMING, started with 20 healthy Piglets built a shelter for them, bought feeds (maize brand), gave them treatment, they reached Six months looking very healthy and almost ready for mkt, I would look at them & say God am out of poverty, Suddenly I woke up one morning I found 2 were dead I threw away the dead ones, called the Vet Dr. who came & treated them again but they all died without getting even a single penny of my investment am so disgusted, lost all my little savings & now back on zero."   One Alex Othieno - most probably from Tororo (where there is reported ASF!)

Wim Goris Said to hear about your loss (thumbs down). But, what where the signs of illnes on the piglets? What treatment was applied by the vet?

Christopher Mulindwa We can do something.....!

Nanyunja Prossy Mr. Mulindwa, what can we do? I am also a pig farmer who would love to know what can be done about the deadly ASF.

1 year 5 months ago

TAMALE JULIUS Its all about farm preventive measures because ASF has no treatment, you need to carry out periodic immunization and immune booster, clean environment, restrict visitors and animals, stop feeding pigs with leftovers among other precautions.

There is a debate on one facebook page about what to do in the impending Africa Swine Fever reportedly in the districts of Masaka, Tororo, Wakiso, Mukono (and Kampala obviously). One person posted that a farmer in Luwero has found usage of human urine as a solution/treatment for the ASF, which I strongly rejected and share a website (you can google - thepigsite) where even the western world is struggling with how to control the wide spread.

I have advised my few newtwork pig farmers to strictly adhere to taking precautionary measures at their farm gate, limit/restrict visits from the pig traders (who move between pig farm and therefore spread the ASF),  avoid movement of animals between farmers (eg sharing boars!), but also stop usage of human food waste as source of pig meals.

Can someone advise whether the quarantine measures are in place at their location? By the way, can we get a firm message from MAAIF in regard to the spread of the ASF?

I already enjoy using our own farme

Roel Snelder Thanks peter for your clear message. Farmgate meassures are for sure crucial as we are used to back here in the Netherlands where the pig plague hits us every now and then. I added the www.thepigsite.com as a clickable site

Counting the cost of foot and mouth disease outbreaks

On Tuesday, Daily Monitor run as story on foot and mouth disease, an extract from the paper read as follows:

With the current situation of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in Uganda, AgriProFocus Nyama Platform proposes a number of actions to control and avert future and continuous losses of the diseases as follows:

Movement control, quarantine restrictions
Ensure the Animal Diseases Act of 1964 is enforced with emphasis on the animal movement controls at borders, within the country, manned livestock routes, enforcement of quarantine restrictions as well putting in place quarantine structures to handle impounded animals. An amendment is proposed to make it more prohibitive than it is now. Continue reading

Wim Goris This article has details on the economic damage of FMD. Nyama Platform is advocating for an action plan with 6 control measures. What is the cost of control and prevention as compared to the damage??

Foot and Mouth Disease in the news!

Farmers raise alarm over foot and mouth disease

The AgriProFocus Nyama platform is pushing for government action in the control of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). Nyama platform has managed to get the attention of the parliamentary committee on agriculture and as a result, a motion on Foot and mouth disease will soon be presented on the floor of parliament to get the attention of the parliamentarians.

Follow the link below to access the news bulletin in the Daily Monitor Newspaper.

http://www.monitor.co.ug/Magazines/Farming/Farmers-raise-alarm-over-foot-and-mouth-disease/-/689860/2647980/-/ws9sydz/-/index.html

I would like to hear your views on the subject!

Daniel Ikaaba I am Just wondering how effecctive CAHWs can be in assisting in service provision in the livestock disease management area. Here in Karamoja region they are being graded depending on their academic levels because it has been discovered that they are a necessary evil in the sector. How best can CAHWs be of much help to the disease management of livestock especially in the hard to reach areas and I am just wondering if they are included as stakeholders in the Nyama Platform. Thanks.
