Making Agribusiness Work For Development: Access to Seed - Uganda

There are many initiatives of AgriProFocus members in Uganda that aim to improve farmers’ access to seed, seed production, quality and affordability of seeds etc. These are for example: the Integrated Seed System Development programme (ISSD) who promote Quality Declared Seed (QDS) and have organized and empowered market-oriented farmers into Local Seed Businesses (LSBs) in Uganda. NGOs Hivos and Bioversity International work together on Community Seed Banks (gene banks) and towards an Open Source Seed System. Seeds remain freely available without patents and an open source seed systems leads to ‘protected commons’, increasing access to seed and biodiversity, safeguarding free access and diverse food systems.

Meet Taban, Gloria and Mary, who will tell their story and see how Agribusiness Works for Development!

Armyworm Maize Attack: A Case for Sustainable Food Production Strategy in Zambia

Blog post by William Chilufya, advocacy officer Sustainable Diets for All, Hivos Zambia

Maize - Zambia's most favoured crop - is under attack from alien armyworms. The pest has already invaded more than 10 percent of farms in the country. The army worms are caterpillars that "march" across the landscape in large groups feasting on young plants, leaving devastation in their wake.

In Zambia, maize is the primary staple crop, and over 90 percent of smallholders rely on it for food security and income. As with other countries in the region, maize dominates production. Despite being a beloved crop in Zambia and other countries in the region, maize is proving a costly crop both at production level and to the dietary needs of Zambia.

The armyworms have a voracious appetite and can eat through a whole maize field if not sprayed with highly expensive pesticides. Invaded fields could lose 30 to 40 percent of their

Elijah Gakomo Thank you. I have have a long hard look at the coffee sector having grown up in coffee growing region and worked for a leading coffee exporter in Kenya. The sector have unique challenges but holds mega potential.

FRIDAH MBAYA coffee has great potential in Kenya, but at the same time faces great extinction. Its time we really appreciate the farmers who labor so hard on the farm by giving them a better price for their products. This can be achieved if we can sell our coffee as a finished product opposed to the raw material and the same is brought back to us as final product.

Coffee toolkit available in Spanish version now!!

Last week I was in Guatemala for the launch of the Spanish version of the coffee toolkit!!! This book was produced a year ago in English under the title ‘ Sustainable coffee as a family business; tools and approaches to include women and youth’.

Thanks to Hivos Central America a Spanish version was produced. The book launch was part of a gender in value chain workshop organized and facilitated by Hivos Central America together with AgriProFocus in Guatemala city. Thirty-five (35) people participated in the workshop representing the development-, the cooperative - and the private sector active in different value chains. The coffee -, the honey - and the cardamom sector were well represented. The workshop was very motivating for the participants to address gender in the development of these value chains, not only for social reasons (gender justice) but also for economic ones (more competitive value chains).
