moderated by Anne Marie Kortleve

Why AgriProFocus?

AgriProFocus supports them in finding new, sustainable ways of doing business. Exchanging perspectives and expecting the unexpected. To accomplish more in a culture of collaboration. For people, planet and profit.

Navigating the network, AgriProFocus staff helps members find the right partners and the right information. Around specific questions, issues and opportunities. Curious to know how long it takes to get to the nearest city from anywhere on Earth?

Cities are a vital pathway to food and nutrition security. The Global Accessibility Map reveals how easy it is for people in different areas to access these resources - and that many people, especially in developing countries, often have to spend long hours to meet their basic needs.

Join us when Andy Nelson - Professor of Spatial Agriculture and Food Security at the University of Twente - presents this suprising and innovative visualisation of worldwide accessibility.

Nelson was asked in 2008 by the World Bank to calculate the number of people who lived within one hour travel time of a city.

‘I didn’t stop at one hour from a city, I kept going and ended up with a global map, which received a lot of attention. It was a completely new visualization of how connected we are,’ says Nelson. ‘We improved the quality of the map thanks to big advances in the available information and means, which we had at our di

Rural youth empowerment to mitigate international migration?

Understanding the relations between jobs and skilled youth in agriculture and migration

What is the relation between youth employment and education in agriculture and migration? And how should organizations working to improve food security via employment and education programs relate to the political agenda of mitigating (international) migration? These were questions discussed during the Community of Practice Youth in food systems Meet-up on September 11, 2018. Edukans and SNV presented insights from their experiences, followed by a lively debate with organizations active in this field – aiming at creating a better understanding of the eclectic relation between job creation, better skilled and qualified youth and the root causes of migration.

The insights from both Edukans and SNV confirm that it is difficult to pinpoint to a direct effect of skills training and education on migration decisions, as there are so many influencing

Youth, Employment and Migration

Understanding the relations between jobs, skilled youth and migration

On September 11, the AgriProFocus network, in close collaboration with the F&BKP, facilitates the fourth Community of Practice (CoP) around Youth in Agribusiness and food systems, entitled “Youth, Employment and Migration – Understanding the relations between jobs, skilled youth and migration”. The aim is to exchange knowledge, share experiences and jointly contribute to innovative solutions for young people to become successful in agrifood sectors and to have their voices heard among decision makers.

Mitigating the root causes of migration dominates todays Dutch development policy. The assumption is that job creation and education in low income countries will prevent youth from moving to Europe. The tendency to frame development policies with the objective to ‘stop migration’ is international. The European Union released numerous calls for proposals which aim to reduce

First Special Business Drinks in Hawassa

For this special Agro-Industry & Nutrition Business Drinks, 70 people participated and enjoyed interesting pitches and open-space networking. This event unique was special because it was the first time a Business Drinks was held out of Addis Ababa. Additionally, several of the participants were academicians and agro-industry experts participating in the International Nutrition and Agro-Industry Conference organized by Hawassa University's Center of Excelence for Human Nutrition.

The first pitch was made by Betelhem Lakew, from BeNu Manufacturing: a start-up company working on nutrition & healthy products. Their product is designed to be a high-protein, nutritious biscuit to address both under & over nutrition. According to Betelhem, their socially responsible business model of “buy one give one” is designed such that the company will give one biscuit for free to a child suffering from under nutrition for every biscuit you buy.

Richard Kanyarukiga Need for Contract Farming can't be over-emphasized! We at UR-CAVM do strongly look forward to these workshops. With appropriate consultations, we could host the workshops by providing venues across the country where we have campuses. Our alumni across the country could do mapping for coordination of sampled producer-market engagements - learning from Ethiopia and Myanmar? We have worked broadly before with Farmer Organizations (Primary Coops, Unions, and Farmer Federations). Main hurdle remains in identifying, maintaining & sustaining markets; as well as develop new/competitive ones. The workshops would be a great vehicle to unlock this...Pse keep us posted. Richard
