Making Agribusiness Work for Development

Few of the challenges humanity faces are as urgent and complex as food security. To meet the needs of a rapidly growing world population, an unparalleled, worldwide effort is required. Members of the AgriProFocus Network are dedicated to meeting this challenge in collaboration. By working together, learning from each other and unitedly pushing for change.

AgriProFocus brings together businesses, civil society, knowledge institutes and governments working towards food security. United in diversity, our members share the conviction that business and development are not mutually exclusive. This is why innovative 'agripreneurs' are at the heart of our strategy. AgriProFocus supports them in finding new, sustainable ways of doing business. Exchanging perspectives and expecting the unexpected. To accomplish more in a culture of collaboration. For people, planet and profit.

Navigating the network, AgriProFocus staff helps members find the right partners and the right information. Around specific questions, issues and opportunities. Rooted in the Netherlands, AgriProFocus is active in 12 countries in Africa and South-East Asia. Stretching from sprawling cities to remote, rural areas. Offering unique exchanges across cultures and disciplines. Cultivating collaboration.

Youth Business Challenge Launch

During the annual network day of AgriProFocus we will officially launch our new program "Youth Business Challenge". The Youth Business Challenge is developed by AgriProFocus and the Ethio-Netherlands Trade for Agricultural Growth (ENTAG) in support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands in Ethiopia. The Youth Business Challenge seeks to bridge the gap between university graduates and agrofood private sector actors in Ethiopia.

In the past weeks we have done the selection of five teams, who will participate in this program. They are fresh graduates and will focus on a waste challenge of a poultry and a potato processing company. The teams will be supported by training and coaching in order to complete the assignment as expected.

On November 22 the partners in this program will present themselves, including their role in the Youth Business Challenge. You will be able to meet the teams who are selected and talk to the companies who partner

Solidaridad and climate smart dairy

Solidaridad shared on their website about their approach to professionalize the dairy industry in Africa and avoid rising carbon emissions as a result of increasing dairy production. The business case for dairy farmers has been calculated in a recent feasibility study in Ethiopia and is currently being implemented in Tanzania. This approach enables dairy farmers in Africa to move from subsistence farming to professional dairy businesses, while using climate-smart production methods. Dairy farmers can mitigate climate change — emissions will be halved compared to the business-as-usual scenario — as well as become an attractive partner for impact investors. Commercial dairy hubs are a key enabler in this concept, providing services and milk collection facilities to farmers.

Working with power in MSPs

Today I attended this seminar at Wageningen CDI https://agriprofocus.com/post/5be315fe26b72a71f45d4e5d It was part of an international training course on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships.  And it was really interesting, especially for us working in coalitions and networks

A presentation by professor Aart DeWulf elaborated on sources of power: resources, legitimacy and authority. Power is present in any coalition where partners represent different stakes. There is also a common interest, an issue that requires joint action.  In this action, the stronger partners need the weaker partners, despite the systemic power imbalance.  There is power playing within the MSP: framing the problem, shaping the outcome. There is also power over the MSP: who sets the agenda, the rules and manages the information flow.

A second presentation by Geertje Schouten discussed the Round Tables on Palm Oil and Soy. Both are MSPs that started around 2004 and ad

Effective solutions to respond to Fall Armyworm in Africa

E-conference outcomes, including videos and links.

The SDSN’s Thematic Network on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems hosted a virtual, e-conference on fall armyworm (FAW) in Africa from October 22 to 26, 2018. Fall armyworm is an agricultural pest native to the Americas but introduced to Africa in 2015 or 2016. In the 3-4 years since its introduction, it has spread across the entire continent and is responsible for maize yield losses ranging from 20-50%. This is especially challenging for smallholder farmers, where yield declines result in lost income and hunger, and who often lack the knowledge or financial resources to recognize and respond to new pest species.

A number of experts presented on the challenge of FAW and solutions, in particular how to move away from the overuse of broad-spectrum pesticides, which are often ineffective and potentially harmful to human and environmental health, towards more effective respo

Storm Water Management Demonstration Celebration

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Ethiopia
  15 November 2018, 00:00-00:01
Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development, AAU, Lideta, Addis

Ethiopia, known as "the water tower of Africa," faces several constraints in terms of timely access to water of sufficient quality and quantity. Excess water, especially in urban areas with ample impervious surfaces, is another recurring challenge. Practical examples of stormwater collection and filtration can help us overcome such challenges, for both agriculture and urban development.

On Thursday November 15th, such practical examples will be open for demonstration at AAU EiABC, courtesy of urban ecology experts such as Dr. Kumelachew Yeshitela. The stormwater management demonstration featured this day is the fruit of a collaboration of the Addis Ababa University Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development and the University of Michigan.

Agromisa Agrodok Special issue on pesticides and poisoning

Agrodok 29: Pesticides: compounds, use and hazards

Pesticides are still being used and this handbook makes an important contribution to how they can be more safely used. It explains what pesticides are, how they are categorised and what their advantages and disadvantages are. Spraying is discussed, as well as types of sprayers, dosage and how equipment should be maintained. Considerable attention is given to the human and environmental hazards of pesticides and the importance of carefully following directions for use and safety measures. This information is reinforced by the inclusion in an appendix of the FAO International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides.

AgroBrief: Pesticide Poisoning

The AgroBrief Pesticide Poisoning deals with the hazards involved in working with pesticides. It is aimed at farmers who have little access to information on pesticides use. It gives an overview of how to prevent problems as wel
