I-PLAN goes Vietnam

Last week I was in Vietnam, where I also participated in the Regional Food Security Conference ‘Let’s get to work. Building a food secure future’. In her key-note address vice-Minister Marjolijn Sonnema rightfully added the word ‘together’ to the title: building a food secure future together.

I had the pleasure to present a good example of working together: a project our network is developing together with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), the PostHarvest Network (PHN) and BoP Innovation Center. This project aims to establish an Indonesian Postharvest Loss Alliance for Improved Nutrition (I-PLAN).

Food losses

In the developing world most food losses take place before consumption and most remarkably, post farm gate between production and consumption. While loss is most often translated to tonnage of primarily staple foods wasted, postharvest loss and waste most dramatically impacts the perishable nutritious foods, which when lost translate t

In case you missed it, the Business Drinks event was great

AgriProFocus, in partnership with Ethiopia Netherlands Trade for Agricultural Growth (ENTAG), organized the second Business Drinks of the year on 30th of March 2017 at Black Rose Lounge, Addis Ababa. The Business Drinks have been organized since 2015 for the purpose of bringing together the agribusiness and agricultural development community for an informal interaction and networking.

On this last Thursday’s event 55 members of AgriProFocus as well as people from partner organizations were present. As always it was interesting to see new faces and to hear pitches about new ideas and innovations. We tried to summarize the pitches in the following manner, so that they could reach those who missed the event.

Belaineh Mekonnen is a researcher and founder of MOMALLOT, which is a private soil fertility research organization in Ethiopia. His organization is “working on the impact of the new way of home gardening through self-water

Making Agribusiness Work For Development: Access to Finance - Benin

In many Sub-Saharan African countries, agricultural development is key to accelerating economic development and overcoming poverty. Increasing agricultural production and productivity is vital for food security, since it provides a source of food and generates income for smallholder farmers. Growth in agricultural production and agri business development also stimulates growth in other sectors of the economy. Limited availability of, and access to finance and services for SME farmers limits the development of the small and medium sized agri-entrepreneurs in Benin.

That is why the Dutch Embassy in Benin and SNV set up the Agribusiness Centres. The Agribusiness Centre’s mission is to promote and stimulate the growth and development of Agribusiness SMEs by providing them advice, assistance and access to finance.  They target Small and Medium Entrepreneurs and Micro enterprises with high growth potential.&nbsp

Report: Youth in Agribusiness Roundtable meeting, 22 March 2017

AgriProFocus Kenya  hosted a Youth in Agribusiness stakeholders round table breakfast meeting on the 22nd of March at the Jacaranda Hotel in Nairobi. This meeting brought together stakeholders working in the youth in agribusiness space from development, private sector, research and academia, young entrepreneurs and government.

The objective of the meeting was to share our journey as a network on what we have been able to achieve, our plans for the future in light of the new strategy; and to have the various stakeholders share and learn from each others experiences and work.

Key from the meeting was the need for more collaborations and partnerships as well as more sharing of our work as stakeholders which reduces duplication of efforts. The stakeholders committed to supporting each other, as well as contributing to the success of the planned flagship projects for 2017. This includes learning labs, business to

The Kenya Market-led Dairy Programme is run by SNV Kenya plus partners and is financed by the Dutch Embassy in Nairobi. Making Agribusiness Work For Development: Access to Seed - Uganda

There are many initiatives of AgriProFocus members in Uganda that aim to improve farmers’ access to seed, seed production, quality and affordability of seeds etc. These are for example: the Integrated Seed System Development programme (ISSD) who promote Quality Declared Seed (QDS) and have organized and empowered market-oriented farmers into Local Seed Businesses (LSBs) in Uganda. NGOs Hivos and Bioversity International work together on Community Seed Banks (gene banks) and towards an Open Source Seed System. Seeds remain freely available without patents and an open source seed systems leads to ‘protected commons’, increasing access to seed and biodiversity, safeguarding free access and diverse food systems.

Meet Taban, Gloria and Mary, who will tell their story and see how Agribusiness Works for Development!

#HEFORSHE: 2SCALE AND AGRIPROFOCUS CELEBRATE MEN WHO EMPOWER WOMEN

Less than 5 percent of women in Mali own land, while more than 30 percent serve as heads of household responsible for providing food, healthcare, and school fees for their children. Because of their social vulnerability, particularly in the Ségou region, 2SCALE prioritizes strengthening women’s economic position in value chains and improving their access to agricultural training, seeds, fertilizers, and land.

Following this objective and in celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8), 2SCALE and the AgriProFocus network in Mali honored four men who demonstrate a proactive commitment to reduce gender-related inequalities in a vegetable partnership the project supports in Ségou. The recipients included:

• Mahamadou Nantoumé, CEO of Guina Agricole, for strengthening women’s access to quality agricultural inputs and phytosanitary services on preferential terms.

• Bakary Coulibaly, community leader, for promoting ge

AgriProFocus Kenya Annual Network Day 2016 - Highlights

Our annual network day held on the 19th October at Karura forest in Nairobi attracted a good number of delegates and exhibitors within the agriculture space. This annual event brings together actors in the public and private sectors to meet, reflect and collaboratively discuss future plans and aspirations as members of the network. This year's theme was "unlocking the business opportunities for food and nutrition security in the wake of climate change." This event comes at a time when as AgriProFocus, we are reflecting back to the 11 years of our existence -- what value we have created for our members and partners, what challenges we've overcome and opportunities ahead.

Some of our achievements for the year 2016:

i) Learning platforms - experiences, lessons learned and innovations shared on our learning platforms.

ii) Cross-project learning - from all the Dutch projects in Kenya providing a multi-stakeholder sharing forum for Da

DryDEV REPORT: Highlights of 6 Farmer Exposure Days

Download report

AgriProFocus Kenya in 2016 organized 6 farmer exposure events in the lower Eastern counties – Machakos, Makueni and Kitui. The structure of the farmer exposure events provided a platform for farmers to learn and also share experiences with other stakeholders. The value chains of focus as per the DryDEV program included; pulses, indigenous poultry, goat, honey and mangoes. However other complimentary aspects for instance water management were also addressed in some of the field days. A lead farmer in each area was identified to host the farmer exposure visit. This provided an opportunity for peer learning.

The objectives of the exposure events are:

1. To provide a platform for farmers to link and learn about market requirement on quality, quantity and logistics

2. To expose and link farmers to value chain financing opportunities

3. Provide opportunity for farmers to learn about products, services and technologie
