“Romance without Finance has no chance” This quote from Rodger Frank founder of innovara captured the mood and theme of the SNV Partners day event. To me the quote explains why young people have shunned away from agriculture. From the era of our grandparents, agriculture in Africa was considered what Dr. Akinwumi Adesina calls a social sector. It was only good for keeping the family going as children were encouraged to go to school work hard get job probably in the City in order to save the family from poverty. This thinking contributed greatly to the state of affairs in the Agriculture sector.
Young people including myself deserve a better life hence the fear of engaging in what has been termed non productive social sector -Agriculture , we have to make money to sustain a family otherwise we are condemned to eternal agony of poverty. Therefore, for young people... Read more

‘Using coaching tools allows us to understand the challenges people face, and to jointly identify goals and actions. Coaching is based on the assumption that the client is resourceful and active in realizing change. Coaching unleashes the coachee’s potential and fosters self-confidence. It is thus more sustainable than giving advice or training, which are less customized to the client’s needs and are usually provided over a shorter period of time.
Relationship of trust
What I personally enjoy about coaching is the relationship of trust with the clients. I like adapting myself to their different agendas. For example, some organizations begin with an internal focus: how can discriminatory practices be changed in their own organization? Others focus on their work in the field: are the women, men, and young people in the cassava, vegetable or fish value chain fairly remunerated for their contributions? How can we eliminate barriers to their participation?... Read more
Achieving the SDGs means going beyond business as usual. Sustainable development requires a range of new partnerships, knowledge exchange and new ways of working together. A key element in the Dutch government’s aid, trade, investment and food security policy is the focus on farmers and their small and medium scale enterprises (SME) in LMIC. Promoting SME’s at a national level has proven to be an effective and sustainable solution for creating more inclusive growth. The collaboration be... Read more
Interest in soil fertility issues has recently become a topic of interest, leading to several declarations that emphasize the importance of soil quality for sustainable development. However, despite these actions, soil nutrient depletion is continuing and sometimes worsening in Uganda. Unlike other forms of environmental degradation, declining soil fertility is often invisible and, when it does become visible through cascading effects, it is often too late. Restoration is then only possible at very high cost.
This is why immediate action is needed as it is crucial to preserve this ‘pantry’ storage function of the soil. This is why AgriProFocus network Uganda in collaboration with SoilCare... Read more

The article is published in the glossy magazine Making Gender Work, cultivating diversity, of AgriProFocus. Read the magazine for more interesting articles!
Instead of focusing on how women benefit from economic development, the question can be turned around: how does business benefit from including women.
