PUM and BiD Network intensify collaboration

Accelerating access to finance and growth for SMEs in emerging markets is the essence of the partnership between PUM Netherlands senior experts and BiD Network. Working together successfully for over two years in Uganda, nine SMEs have been able to attract investment. This month, both parties agreed to intensify their collaboration by expanding to Rwanda and Kenya.

What is unique about the collaboration between BiD Network and PUM, is that it is now possible to offer entrepreneurs a total package. Of course, the entrepreneur is responsible for his or her own company, but essential knowledge and investments are often unattainable. This collaboration offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to take concrete steps and to contribute to the economic development in their country.

Gert van Veldhuisen, CEO BiD Network: ‘’BiD Network and PUM have many synergies and complement each other in the work they do for entrepreneurs in Africa. Where PUM strengthens the

We all want a better future

A Brief Moment: with Selam Wendimu

Could you please introduce yourself and Grohydro to the APF network members in Ethiopia?

My name is Selam Wendimu and I am CEO of Grohydro. Global population is projected to increase 65 percent by 2050, and two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities. Almost all of the increased urbanization, 90 percent, will be in Asia and Africa. With population and income growth, land and water resources become more and more scarce and the fight to grow more with less is real. Grohydro started with a vision to grow more food without needing more land and with much less water. How?

We design, manufacture, install, and maintain low-cost, easy-to-use, hydroponic growing systems for both small-scale and commercial farmers, rural and urban farmers. Our systems are vertical shelf structures that enable farmers to grow dramatically more output using only water and added nutrients. Our hydroponic systems, adapted to fodder a

Atsede Mariam Assefa In support of Selam's work I would recommend people look up hydroponics on Youtube-it really is an eye opener. I started researching this area because I have a dairy and cows need grass all the time-which is almost impossible in the summer. Many farmers are growing fodderfor their animals using a variety of hydroponic systems. My experiment at home was basic but successful. The biggest problem was getting trays long enough to grow enough portions. As someone who doesnt like 'no' or 'you can't because' as a response, I felt hydroponics would be the answer in a country where land was a huge issue. All you need is the equipment, water and fertilizer..I cant wait to try out for myself properly.

Course: Rural Entrepreneurship

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Burundi
  10 June 2019 to 21 June 2019 - All Day Event
  Kumasi, Ghana

Rural entrepreneurship has the potential to drive innovations that can reduce poverty, increase access to food and create employment. For this to happen, actors in agrifood value chains need to trust each other. However, local agrifood value chains are almost always characterised by protectionist behaviour resulting in very high marketing costs and a stalemate, instead of by a drive for positive change and development. This course is focused on breaking the deadlock these value chains are in. It hands you the tools to do that.

Improved performance of local agrifood value chains can result in reduced urban and rural poverty, increased food and nutrition security and more profitable local businesses. This course will take you along a ‘Knowledge in Action’ pathway and process towards achieving impact in these areas.

Date: 10 - 21 June 2019
Registration deadline – general: 29 April 2019

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Myanmar
  03 June 2019 to 21 June 2019 - All Day Event
  Wageningen, The Netherlands

Public and private standards for pesticide residues have become stricter than ever before. Pesticide residues exceeding the maximum residue limits can hamper trade between upcoming economies and the EU. Implementation of Integrated Pest Management is necessary to minimize pesticide applications. But while there are plentiful technical solutions, the application of Integrated Pest Management is still a struggle for many farmers.

The course is aimed at creating mechanisms that will support Integrated Pest Management though looking at pesticides-related policies, the role of the various stakeholders and innovative (technical) solutions. Participants will enhance their ability to identify and solve problems in Integrated Pest Management and food safety. It entails a mix of lectures, discussions, group work, excursions and fieldwork. Meeting colleagues from other countries with similar interests leads to mutual learning.

High-tech packaging means less food waste

Rabobank, 19 April 2018

New types of packaging can extend the shelf life of produce, helping to combat food waste. Wageningen University & Research is one of the bodies worldwide testing prototypes to see what works best.

How can we reduce food waste through packaging? It’s a question research centers around the world are focused on. The answer is not straightforward, says Dr. Jenneke Heising, who specializes in smart packaging that monitors food quality.

Different packaging materials affect the quality of food differently, she explains. “At Wageningen we are conducting research into new solutions with extra features, like active and intelligent packaging.”

Active packaging: extra protection

Heising: “Active packaging protects food by reducing negative factors. For example, oxygen in the air affects the quality of many products. You can embed oxygen scavengers into the packaging material. These scavengers ensure the oxygen level inside th

Increasing access to markets for rural women through e-commerce

Many cooperatives and agri-businesses in rural areas still struggle to access high value markets in Vietnam. They rely heavily on local traders and have little brand recognition. Under the Enhancing Opportunities for Women’s Enterprises (FLOW/EOWE) programme, the Centre for Industry and Trade (COIT) in Ninh Thuan province is implementing a strategy to facilitate access for rural women entrepreneurs to high value markets and strengthen linkages between different actors in selected agricultural value chains.

E-commerce
One of the key aspects of their strategy is to introduce the opportunities of e-commerce to rural cooperatives and agri-businesses and women-led enterprises. E-commerce is gaining popularity in many sectors in Vietnam, however in the agricultural sector, especially in rural areas, it is still relatively unknown. The first e-commerce training under the FLOW/EOWE programme was organised in June 2018 for 36 partici

Food Outlook

Biannual Report on Global Food Markets

released by FAO, July 2018

Amid increased uncertainties from recent rising trade disputes, agricultural markets have so far remained relatively stable thanks to generally good supply conditions across most commodities. Nonetheless, in the context of heightened food import bills, food markets remain vulnerable, with weather shocks and external developments always difficult to predict. Read the full report here.
