Advocacy Manual: Guiding CSOs to advocate for empowerment of women entrepreneurs

Kenya has made substantial progress in improving the enabling environment for women’s economic empowerment and enterprise development by enacting legislation and programmes such as the Kenya Constitution 2010, the Women Enterprise Fund and the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities programme. Despite of this progress some of these policies are only partially implemented, denying women the benefits they would accrue from their full implementation. A key challenge that hinders full implementation of these policies is the lack of gender-responsive policy frameworks and inadequate capacity in county governments. In addition, the voice of women in decision-making processes is weak due to limited involvement of women in government processes. Women therefore have little influence if any, over structures and processes that set the agenda and determine what issues are important.

CSOs as central pillars of change

Meet Remy Rutayisire: A university student on a mission to build a livestock business empire

Jean Remy Rutayisire is quite different from most youths. Unlike the majority of young men and women who find agriculture unattractive, Rutayisire says that this is an industry that has fascinated him since his childhood.

Desperate to raise money to start up an agricultural project, the Chief Executive Officer of the Muhanga based Urugwiro Poultry Farm Ltd took up a part-time job in photography in 2015. Since he was a high school student by then, he was only able to work during holidays, earning a daily wage of Rwf2,000.

He used some for his pocket money at school and saved the rest. By December last year, he had saved up to Rwf200,000—inadequate to see him venture into a significant farming project.

He was looking for Rwf2 million. However, efforts to mobilise capital from friends and relatives were unsuccessful. With his meagre savings, he decided to start a small poultry farm. o his

Entrepreneurship College: SDG 2 Zero Hunger

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Netherlands
  08 November 2018, 17:30-19:00
De Tropen café en restaurant, Mauritskade 64, 1092 AD Amsterdam

On a monthly basis, lectures are organized around the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Every session we invite different guest speakers: academic experts and entrepreneurs working in the field of the SDGs. We will discuss root causes, challenges, relevant theories and important stakeholders, and above all the role of innovation and entrepreneurship to contribute to the realisation of the SDGs. So let’s go back to school, and immerse ourselves in knowledge for sustainability!

On the 8th of November Bram Jansen will give us an introduction to SDG 2: Zero Hunger. One out of four people still goes hungry in Africa. So what targets should we reach in 2030 to tackle hunger and malnutrition? And what is the current state of affairs? Jansen, researcher and lecturer at Wageningen University, is an adventurous anthropologist by heart who has done a great deal of research in the Horn of Africa. On the 8th, he will share his knowledg

Rwandan coffee gets global honours

Coffee produced by Ngororero Coffee Washing Station in Western Province has scooped both the “Best of the Best” and “Coffee Lover’s Choice” awards in a competition that attracted brands from nine countries.

The awards were announced last week in New York, during third annual Ernesto Illy International Coffee Award (EIICA).

The awards are organised by Illycaffè – a global company specialised in high quality coffee trade—which operates in 140 countries worldwide.

It is the first time both honours were bestowed on one coffee lot in the history of EICCA, after rounds of blind tastings by an international independent jury of top culinary and coffee experts, as well as consumers across the globe.

Philotée Mukiza, the production manager at Rwacof Exports Limited – a Rwanda based coffee processor and exporter – received the awards on behalf of the company which owns the Ngororero-based washing station among other stations in the country.

Breakfast Meeting: Cultivating collaboration between Youth initiatives

- Invitation only -

There is more and more recognition for the importance of youth in the AgriFood sector. They  hold the key to finding new, innovative and sustainable solutions for challenges within this sector! This also means there is a rise in the amount and variety of initiates supporting youth in this sector.

AgriProFocus has identified the need for more collaboration between these initiates, creating a more aligned supply of support to young agripreneurs.

That is why AgriProFocus has been working the last couple of months on the design of a new global youth initiative that focuses on synergy and collaboration between youth projects/programmes worldwide.

This design is taking shape, thanks to the regular input from members, and we are getting really enthusiastic!

We are organizing a breakfast meeting on the 23rd of October, getting even more input from members. At this meeting we take a breat

Delivering on the transformational potential of PPPs

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Netherlands
  20 November 2018, 09:30-16:30
  New World Campus, The Hague

Over the last four years, PPPLab, our partners and organisations engaged in PPPs have explored the transformational potential of PPPs. The emergence of the SDG-P facility is a good moment to concretely spell out how this potential should be delivered upon and what the implications for our collective roles are.

That means PPPs must:

• Aspire to deliver systemic change

• Be fit to realise their aspirations

• Rethink risk and blend finances

By the end of the day you will have a sharp idea of where you can take your PPP work to a next, necessary level and we will have formulated an action and learning agenda for a PPP community of practice.
