Effective targeting of farmers

Looking for good practices from AgriProFocus network members

Key question

Do you have interesting experiences in targeting specific categories of farmers (and other entrepreneurs)? Did the targeting of specific categories help achieving success?

Background

Programmes and investments in food and nutrition security could be more effective when interventions are (better) adapted to the different target groups. Often, agrifood programmes and investments are designed to reach several groups or clients, not always with a clear rationale how the different groups of farmers or entrepreneurs would be reached out to. See also a short video from a recent debate in the NL that explains it clearly.

As a network, we want to feed the Dutch and international policy debate with ideas on how to improve this situation. For this, we would like to know the practical experiences of network members.

What cases are we looking for?

A project/programme that used a particular targeting str

MUBARAK INUWA Effectiive Targeting Of  Farmers:If  an Agririan is asked, how can he effect targeting farmers, in his farming operation for the benefit of farmers who produce crops or animal husbandry. The answer perhaps, might be by adapting the knowledge of Agricultural services skills. This would give a farmer how he would achieved in raising a profitable farming practices.Either rainfed  season operation or irrigated season practices.

MUBARAK INUWA By advising farmers on the right time of planting crops, so that the planted crop would reach of to the optimum period of growth before the yield could be harvested.Though these could be on the case of annual crops only not the perennials.

Richard Kanyarukiga Nicole's posting/idea indeed deserves a serious consideration when proposing interventions for impact. For agribusinesses in Rwanda - likely all Africa & other developing countries, programmes need not only focus on specific value chains - e;g; banana, potato, maize, rice, etc; but also on specific & special needs of various categories: subsistence, small-holder commercial, to medium-large scale. There is also need do override generalization e.g. "horticulture" and start focusing on individual chains - e.g. wine banana, dessert banana, cooking banana, spices, etc.Hi Nicole?

Nicole Metz Thanks Mubarak Inuwa and Richard Kanyarukiga for your comments. Let me try to respond: Mubarak I think you refer to well-targeted Agricultural extension and support services. That is helpful, could you give an example of such well-targeted services in your country/region? Richard, indeed we are looking for examples of interventions adapted to specific and special needs of various categories indeed. The categorisation may be according to value chain, as you point out, but it may be according to e.g. socio-economic, cultural or market access differences in addition. If you have examples, Richard, of organisations or companies that have found good practices to adapt their way of working with different categories, that would be helpful. best regards, Nicole

Susan Mbanda Am very much impressed with the video and what was discussed.  I agree with Ben on design and implementation part.  It would be good when the target in this case poor farmers are thought of during the designing phase and have their user requirements in mind.  This would then  be passed on upto implementation and so they will not end up being left out.  Thanks for the video

IMPACT INVESTING IN CLIMATE-SMART AGRI (Rabobank in Brazil)

This market assessment offers an overview about impact investing in climate-smart agriculture in Brazil, especially in the biomes Amazonia, Atlantic Forest, and the Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah).

The motivation behind its development is based on three main points: the first one is to provide an overview of who is doing what and how in this field and through the reported cases and key topics like risk mitigation strategies and finance vehicles, to attract foreign investors’ confidence about this business area.

The second one is to share good practices and business models in this field; and the third one is to provide the basis to increase impact investing in climate-smart in countries in which agriculture plays a big role in emissions' reduction

Being a frontier market, impact investing in climate-smart agriculture still lacks documented and proven business models that, in addition to environmental benefits, offer financial r

Take care when upscaling innovations

(Credits: Resource, WUR, author: Roelof Kleis)

Upscaling innovations without giving it due thought can go badly wrong. PhD candidate Seerp Wigboldus appeals for responsible upscaling, in which the possible effects are calculated beforehand and then monitored.

Solutions to the world’s problems are usually sought in technology. Innovations are welcomed with open arms and rolled out on a large scale as quickly as possible, all in the interests of progress. But is that really so smart? No, says rural sociologist Seerp Wigboldus. In his thesis, To scale or not to scale – that is not the only question, which he will defend on 11 September, he seriously questions this approach.

Examples abound. Plastic packaging material was a fantastic invention. But it has now caused massive pollution all over the world. ‘Irrigating farmland in the Soviet Union led to th

Evaluation

Evaluation of the Food & Business Knowledge Platform 2013-2018

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs agreed to do a review for the first phase of the Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP), 2013 – 2018. AgriProFocus is among the consortium members that had set up and implemented the Office facilitating this Platform. The Evaluators Ton Dietz and Joep van den Broek were appointed to look at the relevance, effectiveness and efficiency of the Platform and based on this to formulate recommendations for the future outlook of the Platform. And as such to provide input to the Ministry for decision making on a possible second phase of the F&BKP. Please find below the review highlights; a link to the full PDF can be found at the bottom of this page.

The relevance of the F&BKP in the Food and Nutrition Security field

Help shape a livestock feed and forage strategy for international research

The availability of sufficient and adequate feed is one of the most significant constraints to livestock productivity in the tropics. It is an enormous challenge that requires innovation and concerted action towards agreed priority outcomes.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is committed to delivering evidence and developing capacities in feed and forage development as part of its strategy to achieve better lives through livestock.

To ensure the best response to the fast-changing demands and opportunities in this sector, ILRI is developing a strategy on feed and forage research for development.

As a first step, it seeks inputs from the wider community - not necessarily animal feeding experts - to take stock of the challenges in this area, identify priority outcomes and promising approaches to achieve them, and specify the precise contributions and added value of ILRI in this area.
