Youth, Employment and Migration

Understanding the relations between jobs, skilled youth and migration

On September 11, the AgriProFocus network, in close collaboration with the F&BKP, facilitates the fourth Community of Practice (CoP) around Youth in Agribusiness and food systems, entitled “Youth, Employment and Migration – Understanding the relations between jobs, skilled youth and migration”. The aim is to exchange knowledge, share experiences and jointly contribute to innovative solutions for young people to become successful in agrifood sectors and to have their voices heard among decision makers.

Mitigating the root causes of migration dominates todays Dutch development policy. The assumption is that job creation and education in low income countries will prevent youth from moving to Europe. The tendency to frame development policies with the objective to ‘stop migration’ is international. The European Union released numerous calls for proposals which aim to reduce

Invitation to a workshop to launch a Soil Platform in RWANDA

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Rwanda
  11 September 2018, 08:30-16:00
  Lemigo Hotel, Kigali

Dear all,

Warm greetings from Wageningen.
It is my pleasure to bring to your attention the ongoing preparations for a workshop to set up a stakeholder platform for soil fertility in Rwanda.
The workshop will take place on Tuesday, September 11th, 2018 at Lemigo Hotel.
I am sharing this update on behalf of SoilCares (now part of AgroCares), a leading Dutch AgriTech company based in Wageningen (Visit the company website for more information).

SoilCares has developed a technology to scan soils and immediately provide nutrients content and fertilizer recommendations based on the crop a farmer plans to grow on a particular season. Rwanda was one of the first countries to adopt this technology through partners such as ENAS and HollandGreenTech.

Myself being a Rwandan, I believe this technology could have an enormous impact on how fertilizer recommendation and soil fertility is conducted in our country, with positive impact on both financial and environmental outcomes.
I have attached the invitation t

Speech by Regional Director of ICCO-ROWA
Ms. Leena LINDQVIST at FINAGRI Mali

After her traditional words of welcome, Mrs. Leena LINDQVIST hailed the massive presence of women and the level of general mobilization of rural actors, all of which seem to reflect the challenges of financing agriculture.

She also suggested that the agricultural sector is one of ICCO's priorities for action and that the financing constraints of Agriculture in Mali, amply justify the holding of the Agricultural Finance Fair. For Ms. LINDQVIST, this show is a niche that will certainly provide solutions to the problem of financing agriculture.

She also invited the two negotiating parties (project sponsors and financing institutions) to have more flexibility and concessions in order to guarantee the success of the Fair.

Finally, she welcomed the partners and sponsors of FINAGRI for their vision

Sustainable development requires a transformation of food systems

We need to transform our food systems if we want to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and combat climate change. This is the message of an article published in the journal “Agronomy for Sustainable Development” on August 9th. According to the authors, food systems “are at the nexus that links food security, nutrition, and human health, the viability of ecosystems, climate change, and social justice.” They are not just vital for achieving SDG2, which focuses on ending hunger and malnutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture – they concern the entire 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. “We need to implement a comprehensive transformation in food systems, centering on different paradigms and models from those of the 20th century,” said lead author Patrick Caron, a researcher with CIRAD and Chair of the UN’s High-Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition. He stressed that the
