Dialogue with the Farmers

On the 2nd Agricultural Extension and Finance Fair

On March 2015 AgriProFocus Ethiopia and OXFAM GB, in close collaboration with Rift Valley Children and Women Development Organization, organized in Batu a successful agribusiness finance fair which farmers took the stage. Read more about the previous Finance Fair HERE.

Yesterday, April 27 2016, the 2nd Agricultural Extension and Finance Fair was organized in Batu with the objective of extending the dialogue started on last year’s Finance Fair between the farmers themselves and the relevant stakeholders. On this Finance Fair also the farmers were given to express their challenges relating to access to finance and agricultural extension services and to present their achievements with the support of OXFAM GB and Rift Valley Children and Women Development Organization.

The event which included a panel discussion with two paper presentations and an exhibition by different organizations, opened by blessings from Aba Gadas, respected elders of the area in the Oromo people tradition.

The keynote speaker Obo Kedir Nafo, Executive Director of the Oromia Seed Enterprise, not only address existing financial challenges of the horticulture farmers, but also played a major role on the panel discussions by explaining and responding questions for the farmers.

Over 150 people attended the event, and around 70% of them were farmers from different Woredas where OXFAM GB is implementing its project. OXFAM GB, in collaboration with Rift valley Children and Women Development Organization, has been supporting women farmers in creating access to finance and in providing agricultural extension services. Sinqee Women Onion and Potato Seed Multiplier Group, which is the beneficiary of the project, was one of the exhibitors in the Finance Fair.

Totally 10 organizations took booths to exhibit and promote their products and services. Bussa Gonoffa Microfinance, Oromia Credit and Saving Share Company (OCSSCO), and Dura Shala Saving and Credit Cooperative Union were exhibitors from the finance sector. Melkassa Agricultural Research Center brought best varieties of fruit seeds and attracted many visitors by providing detail explanations about its activities. Different types of farmers’ cooperatives and unions were also part of the exhibition.

It is for the ninth times that AgriProFocus Ethiopia organized this kind of Finance Fair with its partners like OXFAM GB.
