2018 IUFoST STUDENT VIDEO COMPETITION

The IUFoST World Food Congress Student Video Competition is being conducted in conjunction with the 19th IUFoST World Congress of Food Science and Technology (World Food Congress), taking place in Mumbai, India, from October 23-27, 2018. More information on the World Food Congress can be found at IUFoST2018.com. IUFoST is delighted to announce that this competition is newly named: "IUFoST Rose Spiess Award For A Sustainable Food Supply".

Food science and technology plays an important role of ensuring the health and wellbeing of people around the world and is essential to resolving food safety and sustainability challenges now and in the future. How that happens is unique to each country – even to the community level within each country.

The goal of the IUFoST Student Video Competition is for student teams to use video to spotlight the positive impact of food science and technology in action where they live including, but not limited to, issues such as:

• sustainability and alleviating hunger

• assisting with improved health and wellbeing (improving nutrition)

• reducing food losses and food waste

• providing education and training

• ensuring food safety all along the production chain

• the impact of emerging technologies

• any other application which benefits your community, country or region

A one-page submission explains a short description of the problem, an explanation of the proposed solution and the benefits for the community.

VDO should especially focus on the practical realisation of the underlying concept and highlight its novelty and benefits for the community. Furthermore ideas of an extension of the presented should be indicated.

1. General Content Requirements

a) All content in the video must be original material, not previously published or in the public domain. Plagiarism of any kind will result in disqualification. This includes music, graphics and images.

b) No copyrighted materials may be used for this contest unless the contestant owns the copyright or has license to use that material for this contest. Written permission must be provided upon request of all copyrighted materials

c) No professional assistance for creation of this video is permitted

d) Content must comply with all local and national laws of the country of origin and Canada

Content must not:

i. Promote illegal behaviour.

ii. Support racial, religious, sexual or other invidious prejudice.

iii. Advocate sexual or violent exploitation.

iv. Violate rights established by law or agreement.

v. Invade the privacy of any person.

vi. Be otherwise inappropriate as determined by the designated member of the IUFoST Governing Council in their sole and conclusive determination. Any such determinations are final.

2. Prizes

a) The IUFoST Student Video Competition will be awarded in four categories:

i. Grand Prize

ii. Finalist

iii. Semi-Finalist

iv. 2 Honourable mentions

Prizes for each category will be awarded based on the criteria, judging rubric and rules below. All entrants will be notified privately before a public announcement of the Grand Prize winner, finalist, semi-finalist and honourable mentions.

3. The Judges

a) An international panel of judges comprised of food science and technology experts will determine the prize-winning videos.

b) Judges may vote on a submission from their (home) country.

c) The panel of judges have absolute discretion interpreting the criteria, rubric and rules

d) All panel decisions are final.

4. The Rules

a) There is no entry fee

b) Contestants must be 18 years of age but not more than 30 years old and enrolled in an educational institution

c) Individuals and groups may submit the application together with the video entries. Only one prize will be awarded per video. Deadline for Submission is April 1, 2018.

d) All contestants must email IUFoST a link to their video by June 1, 2018.

e) Late entries will not be considered.

How to Submit

f) Entries may be submitted to the following email address janet@janetviljoen.co.za with the Subject: IUFoST STUDENT VIDEO COMPETITION 2018

g) The email must include a link to a video storage service that has the video (e.g., Drop Box, Google Drive, OneDrive etc.)

h) YouTube videos will not be considered

i) Video Entries

i. More than one video entry may be submitted by contestants, to a maximum of three, but only one prize will be awarded per contestant, whether an individual or group.

ii. Video submissions should be produced in English if possible.

iii. Contestants must ensure that videos not produced in English include a captioned English translation or their submission will be disqualified

iv. Videos must not exceed five minutes, including a 10-second full screen Title Screen

v. The 10-second full screen Title Screen must include the following in writing:

i.) Name of contestants

ii.) School name

iii.) Programme name

iv.) Year of graduation

v.) Country

vi.) Contact email (or phone) and address

vii.) Name of the VDO project

viii.)Length of video (including 10-second title screen)

vi. Videos must be submitted in one of the following formats:

i.) .WebM files (Vp8 video codec; Vorbis Audio codec)

ii.) .MPEG4, 3GPP and MOV files - (h264 and mpeg4 video codecs; AAC audio codec)

iii.) .AVI (MJPEG video codec; PCM audio)

iv.) .MPEGPS (MPEG2 video codec; MP2 audio)

v.) .WMV

vi.) .FLV (Adobe - FLV1 video codec, MP3 audio)

vii.) .MTS o) Please submit videos with highest quality possible.

5. Additional Competition Information

If chosen as a Grand Prize winner, Finalist, Semi Finalist or Honourable Mentions, the

only compensation for submitting a video is the opportunity to be awarded a prize if the entry wins. IUFoST and its designates, including all judges, are in no way liable to the filmmaker under any circumstances and will award no additional compensation for entries. Contestants should keep at least one copy of their video. IUFoST is not responsible for any submissions that are lost, damaged, or do not upload properly or cannot be opened by judges. Due to the number of entries, only the Semi-Finalists, Finalist and Grand Prize winners will receive feedback on their submissions. The IUFoST Student Video Competition 2018 is the sole undertaking of the International Union of Food Science and Technology. No social media sites, including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or any others are involved in any way. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn in no way endorse, promote or support this competition and are not legally liable for any claims which may arise therein. Ownership of the underlying intellectual property of the video remains with the contestant, with the following exceptions:

• Contestants grant IUFoST the right to use their names, photographs, statements, quotes, testimonials, and video submissions for publicity, advertising and promotional purposes without notification or further compensation.

• Contestants grant IUFoST the right to use, reproduce, reprint, distribute, perform, and or display all or part of the contestant’s project video without further compensation or notification to the contestant.

• IUFoST maintains the right to reproduce, reprint, distribute, perform, display or exhibit the video for advertising, publicity and promotional purposes on their websites, IUFoST social media platforms, conferences, (including the 2018 IUFoST World Congress) or at any other venues.

• By accepting the prizes, winners agree to hold IUFoST and all IUFoST employees harmless against any and all claims and liability arising out of use of such prizes. Winners assume all liability for any injury or damaged caused from participation in the contest or use/redemption of any prize.

• Contestants agree to be bound by the official contest rules and decisions of the judges.
