For this special Agro-Industry & Nutrition Business Drinks, 70 people participated and enjoyed interesting pitches and open-space networking. This event unique was special because it was the first time a Business Drinks was held out of Addis Ababa. Additionally, several of the participants were academicians and agro-industry experts participating in the International Nutrition and Agro-Industry Conference organized by Hawassa University's Center of Excelence for Human Nutrition.
The first pitch was made by Betelhem Lakew, from BeNu Manufacturing: a start-up company working on nutrition & healthy products. Their product is designed to be a high-protein, nutritious biscuit to address both under & over nutrition. According to Betelhem, their socially responsible business model of “buy one give one” is designed such that the company will give one biscuit for free to a child suffering from under nutrition for every biscuit you buy.
The second pitch made by Abinet Tekle from NEED Nutritional Service and Products Plc, which offers the following services and Products:
• Use of mass media (Sewegna TV shows and FBC radio shows) to spread nutritional awareness.
• Nutrition counseling to treat under and over nutrition.
• Healthy meal services to supplement of nutrition counseling.
• Nutrition consultancy.
Dr. Yehenew G/Silassie from CASCAPE gave the third pitch. CASCAPE has a nutrition background and now he is specialized and working as a soil scientist. “As we heard yesterday, nutrition starts with the soil, so I am still very much with you.” CASCAPE (Capacity building for scaling up evidence-based practices) is a collaborative project between 6 different universities in Ethiopia, including Hawassa University, funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands. CASCAPE seeks to support the Government of Ethiopia in its implementation of the Agricultural Growth Programme (AGP) by increasing the productivity of smallholder farmers through scaling up of evidence-based practices.
AgriProFocus Ethiopia and Ethiopia Netherlands Trade for Agricultural Growth (ENTAG) have been organizing bi-monthly Business Drinks events since 2015. These events have created an opportunity for members and partners to come together to promote themselves, to connect and share experiences. Agribusinesses, agricultural development agents, government actors, research institutes and other relevant agricultural actors are continually represented in these events.
