Coping with Change: Resilient & sustainable food systems, from theory to practice

Seminar 12 April 2017

The world is changing and is becoming more unpredictable and uncontrollable. This holds for both social and natural conditions, with climate change and globalisation being major drivers of change in the world. People around the world are increasingly exposed to extreme weather events, economic crises, food crises, disease epidemics, social instability and political conflicts. The resulting insecurity not only affects the global social and economic systems, but also (local) food systems and their farmers who stand at the basis of food production.
Insecurity is inherently linked to farming and increasingly farmers and other food chain actors are dealing in many ways with multiple and simultaneous shocks and changes affecting food systems. While coping with increased insecurity, the agricultural sector also needs to face future challenges of feeding a growing and urbanising population with

Course on Making agriculture work for food and nutrition sec

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Netherlands

Fellowship opportunity

Despite the world-wide increase of food availability 1 out of 3 people are malnourished due to undernourishment, micronutrient deficiencies and/or overweight. Evidence shows that malnutrition has life-long detrimental impacts on learning capacity, productivity and income-generating potential of populations.
The sustainable development goals aim to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by year 2030.
Agriculture plays a key role in the provision of food and nutrition security. But agricultural programs and policies do not automatically lead to better nourished populations. In some cases these programs and policies can even be detrimental to the nutritional situation of vulnerable groups. Agricultural programs and policies need to take nutrition outcomes into account.

Course on Fisheries governance for food security with fellow

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Netherlands
  23 October 2017 to 10 November 2017 - All Day Event
  Wageningen The Netherlands

Fellowship opportunity

Fisheries contributes to food security and nutrition and plays a vital role in global, national and rural economies.

Fish is highly nutritious and serves worldwide as a valuable supplement in diets lacking essential proteins, vitamins and minerals. The primary threats undermining the food and nutrition security potential of fisheries results from ineffective management coupled with poor conservation of habitats. To enhance the contribution of fisheries to food and livelihoods security a transition towards more people centred governance approaches is needed. Involvement of the public, civil society and private sector is required to develop incentives for sustainable ecosystem management and to ensure that the role of fisheries in reaching global food production is taken into account.
