MCRB’s inputs are based on the field research conducted at oil palm plantations in Tanintharyi Region during July-December 2017 at 17 oil palm plantations in Tanintharyi Region as part of its Sector-Wide Impact Assessment (SWIA) of the oil palm sector which will be published next year. Hundreds of oil palm plantation managers and plantation workers were interviewed, as well as relevant government ministries, local authorities and NGOs and CSOs. MCRB’s findings are also supported by the Fauna and Flora International’s (FFI’s) field research findings.

Access to Seeds has launched its latest Index, evaluating and ranking seed companies according to their efforts to improve access to quality seeds of improved varieties for smallholder farmers. The results of the South and Southeast Asia (SSEA) Index were announced during the Asian Seed Congress attended by members of the Asia Pacific Seed Association (APSA) including private seed companies and national seed associations.
Out of 24 companies, East-West Seed garnered the highest score which takes into account the indicators of Commitment, Performance, Transparency and Leadership for 7 measurement areas: Governance & Strategy, Genetic Resources, Intellectual Property, Research & Development, Seed Production, Marketing & Sales, and Capacity Building. Aim of the workshop is to share research findings of the research project entitled “Promoting the floating rice-based agroecological farming systems for a healthy society and adaptation to climate changes in the Lower Mekong Region and Myanmar”, funded by The Mitsui & Co. Environment Fund from 2017 to 2019, led by A/Prof Jamie Pittock and Dr. Van Kien Nguyen (the Australian National University), partnered with Yangon University (Prof Nilar Nilar Aung), Ecoland Research Center – Royal Agriculture University (Dr Malyne Naeng), Research Center for Rural Development – An Giang University (Mr Le Thanh Phong).

Agriterra and FrieslandCampina will be working together over the next five years to improve the business operations of farmers in Asia and Africa. To this end, the organizations have signed a new cooperation agreement. The agreement was signed on Monday 29 October by Hein Schumacher, CEO of FrieslandCampina, and Marc Calon, chairman of the board of Agriterra. Myanmar can now export aquaculture products to the EU market, according to the recent decision and amended made by the Commission Implementing Decision (EU). Aquaculture products from Myanmar was once banned by the EU mainly due to the lack of food safety and monitoring plan.

With the surge in population, rising purchasing powers, and increase in openness of the country, exciting business opportunities abound in Myanmar! The DaNa Facility, a UK government Department for International Development (DFID) funded programme, and De Heus Myanmar, an international animal feed business, have announced a joint investment of over US$3.2 million in a project focused on increasing the income and productivity of pig farmers across Myanmar.
They said it would be the largest single business investment in Kayah State. The De Heus project will work to address significant issues facing domestic pork production in Myanmar, including problems related to the quality of feed, breeding stock, veterinary services, bio-security issues and the genetics of domestic pigs, which negatively affect pig producers and consumers.
De Heus will also establish demonstration farms in Kachin, Chin, Naypyitaw, Shan, Yangon, Bago, Mandalay, Pyay, Pathein and Kayah to provide training for around 10,000 farmers to improve their pig-rearing and management practices.
