Annette van Andel

Network Facilitator

Arnhem, Netherlands

About Me

Nice to meet you! In May 2014 I joined the AgriProFocus team in The Netherlands as network facilitator, working in close collaboration with the country teams in Kenya, Mali and Niger. In addition, I focus on Youth in Agribusiness - an important topic for our members both in The Netherlands and the AgriProFocus country networks. It is very inspiring to work together with young people to develop creative services and products that will increase awareness about the many opportunities for young people in the agri-food sector and to facilitate them to improve and grow their agribusinesses.
I studied Human Geography of developing countries at the University of Amsterdam and both my masters and Ph.D. theses are studies about livelihood strategies in semi-arid areas in Zimbabwe and Cameroon respectively. I lived and worked for many years in several African countries: Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Benin, Ghana, Zambia.

Today Caroline and I will be participating in the Vijverbergsession: “Youth inclusiveness in agricultural transformation” of FoodFirst, organized by the Food&Business Knowledge Platform, AgriProFocus and Include.

Topic & target

The Vijverberg will delve into an important nexus of development concerns in Africa: food insecurity, rapid population growth and youth unemployment. The agri-food sector is expected to offer great opportunities to tackle these issues. Several “problematic areas” for youth inclusion in agriculture have been defined by scholars, policy makers and practitioners, such as access to knowledge, information and education, access to land, access to financial services, access to green jobs, access to markets, and engaging in policy dialogue. Nevertheless, policy and program framing and responses to the “problem” of young people and agriculture in Africa are still hampered by a lack of (context specific) evidence and therefore often fall back on “common k

Youth and Agriculture – How to attract youth again?

From the old people’s business to youth’s new future

Blog by: Arrigo Osti, Jan van t Land, Daniel Magwegwe, Anna Peereboom, Julia van Oord, Théau Dusart

“It’s my last resort” or “It’s for the old people”, two remarks we heard from young people about working in the agricultural sector in Ethiopia and Kenya. The disinterest from young people to be working in a job related to agriculture is alarming. Especially when we consider the expected population growth and the lack of food connected to that. The question is how are we able to keep the youth into agriculture and how can we provide them with jobs that makes them happy?

In the period September- October 2015, we six students from the Wageningen University executed a research for Fair & Sustainable Advisory Services and AgriProFocus in which we particularly looked to who youth actually are, where youth is involved in the agricultural value chain and what causes them to dr

Visit to Kenya

Last week I returned from a 9-day trip to Kenya where I met the team - Amos-Maureen-Jillian - for the first time. Hedwig, our director, joined the last 5 days. It was hectic, very interesting and we had fun. I am very impressed with the results of the network day. As you probably read already, more than 500 people participated: (farmer) entrepreneurs, business people, Government representitives and non-profit organisations. I attach the programme for you to see which interesting side events were offered during the day. The AgriProFocus Kenya network is, as one member put it: 'getting serious popularity', known in several counties in the country and in and around Nairobi thanks to quality events as business fairs, market events, B2B and expert meetings. Looking ahead at 2015, we will continue to expand as a network and critically maintain the quality of services we offer. We will improve our value propositions and be more pro-active to offer our services to m
