AgriTech mobile trading platform to aid sub-Saharan farmers

A Cambridge company aiming to lift sub-Saharan farmers out of poverty by creating a market for their surplus was one of two winners in Agri-Tech East’s GROW agri-tech business plan competition.

Farming Data’s mobile trading platform uses mobile money and SMS texting on a basic phone to allow smallholders and buyers to communicate and trade more effectively. Smallholders grow 50 per cent of the world’s food and 40 per cent of global food production relies on irrigation.

Dr Belinda Clarke (pictured), Director of Agri-Tech East, said that the entries this year were looking at global challenges: “Smart water use, enhancing data available for decision support and improving profitability by finding markets for edible waste were strong themes among the entries this year. Many were looking for partners and investors for pilot studies and this is where the agri-tech cluster in the east of England is particularly strong.“

AgroCenta, KIC encourage young graduates to self-employ

When preparation meets opportunity, the result is obvious – success. This is exactly how the painstaking preparations of Francis Obirikorang and Michael Ocansey to start a business of using information and communications technology (ICT) to solve some challenges in the agricultural value chain became a reality and is already making waves across emerging economies.

The pair have successfully started AgroCenta after taking part in the 2016 AgriTech Challenge, a grant competition organised by the Kosmos Innovation Centre (KIC), the social investment programme by Kosmos Energy Ghana.

Open data benefits for agriculture and nutrition

Article from Food & Business Knowledge PlatformCurated from ictupdate.cta.int

This issue of ICT Update (PDF) by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) and Global Open Data for Agriculture & Nutrition (GODAN) portrays how GODAN and other stakeholders are creating a global open data movement in agriculture and nutrition from the perspectives of its users by showcasing some of the best practices and the most common challenges in this field. The article ‘The impact of open data on smallholder farmers‘ discusses the degree to which more freely available data could be of use to smallholder households and the current impact of existing open data initiatives. There is a lot potential, but a lack of reliable and contextualised data is currently working against smallholder farmers. Potential benefits for smallholder farmers are identified as increased participation and self-empowerment, improved or new products s

FeedCalculator App!

In case you missed it, the Dutch trade mission brought a FeedCalculator app to the 2017 Agritech Expo at the Holland Pavilion.

The feedcalculator is an innovative smartphone app for livestock farmers in developing countries to make their own profitable feed mixes. It allows small-scale livestock farmers to optimize their own feed mixes. As you might be aware, many farmers do not have access to high quality and affordable feed for their livestock. Also tons of feed are wasted because farmers have neither the capacity nor the access to the knowledge and tools that are available in developed countries. The Feed Calculator is about to change this, and their lives.

With the FeedCalculator, millions of farmers have the potential to increase both their livestock productivity, and their income. The feed calculator is easy to use, gives a mixture of high quality feed standard and always gives the lowest price of feed ingredients. However, the feed calculator currently suppor

Agri-tech startup Zazu, a digital marketplace connecting farmers to buyers

https://www.zazuafrica.com/

At 4am in a public transport ‘kombi’, our founder Perseus witnessed an 80 year old lady carrying produce to market. She knew that if she didn’t wake up in time, or walk the 1 1⁄2hour to the road, she would miss the best buyers from the market. But she had a phone to communicate with her grandchildren, about her journey. So he came up with an idea - markets that come to you. Irregardless of location.

What started out as a way to pass market prices to smallholder farmers in emerging markets, is now changing the lives of many farmers across the world.

Zazu helps everyone make competitive decisions on buying and selling. Zazu will continue to simplify the value chain with one of the planet’s most valuable resources: food.

AgriTech innovation breaks down barriers for African cassava farmers

Although cassava is an important part of the diet for 800 million people in Africa, shortage of equipment for processing has meant production has been unable to increase.

To meet this need a social impact business, Aspuna Group, is developing a cassava processing facility in The Gambia to convert the raw material into starch and reduce unemployment.
