Eight new projects were granted in the fourth call of the Global Challenge Programme, by NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development, in collaboration with the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform. The call focuses on contributing to business models, incentives and innovative finance for scaling Climate Smart Agriculture.
Transdisciplinary proposals were submitted by consortia of research organizations, a public and/or private organization from an LMIC, and CCAFS. Research will take place in the following countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia and in the region East Africa.

As one of the planned agenda items of the 2nd International Symposium on Agroecology: Scaling Up agroecology to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), FAO will select and showcase successful experiences in agroecology in action that can be scaled up and out. We will select 12 cases to be presented by speakers during a session of the International Symposium (10min each presentation). The selection of cases will be based on the following criteria:
· Contribution made to scale-up agroecology
· Potential to be replicated and further scaled-up/out
· Addresses each of the three pillars of sustainability (social environmental and economic)
· Regional balance will be ensured
· For each region, case studies involving governmental and non-governmental initiatives will be included

“Closing the loops within the dairy farm can save resources, finances, and create new value for both the farmer, the direct environment, and the neighboring farmers.”
There is an interesting potential to enhance circularity in the dairy sector as well as in other agricultural sectors. Applying circular economy principles in agribusiness helps to save resources, to reduce the amount of waste and the negative environmental impact, and creates value. A ‘circular dairy economy’ tool developed by VHL Master student Mr. Mehrab Marri was discussed in a network meeting with AgriProFocus members and VHL students. The meeting generated interesting ideas for further learning on the concepts and practice of Circular Economy Agribusiness.

On September 28, the fifth Food for All Talk (#FFATalks) under the WBG-Netherlands Partnership took place, entitled “Overusing Antibiotics in the Livestock Sector: something can be done!”. Chief Veterinary Officer of the Netherlands Christianne Bruschke gave an overview of the best practices from the Netherlands and Lorenzo Terzi from the European Commission explained the new “One Health” developments in Brussels (EC).
In this fifth edition of the Food for All Talk series, a World Bank Group (WBG) audience was informed on how the sector can organize and adapt itself for success. And on how this can be done without sacrificing livestock production or farmer income, also in low- and middle-income countries and benefiting from the perspective of the broader One Health approach.

This was deliberated on Tuesday, September 5 at the 7th African Green Revolution Summit in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
In a session on “Women in Agriculture”, leaders in politics, business and civil society discussed how challenges to women in agriculture can be overcome and how young women can be facilitated to join the sector.

The picture of Africa’s increasing dependence on imports and large-scale agricultural expansion to keep up its food supply needs nuancing. Domestic production increase was the dominant factor for food supply growth. Cross-country differences in food production trends and in the role of agricultural expansion are large. This is the main message of a PBL study on national-level food supply and land use trends in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This thesis is a sociological analysis of the agri-food system that feeds most of the over four and a half million residents of the fast-growing city of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. It is based on qualitative research that has generated a picture of the food system that supplies the important foods for the majority of residents of the city. The research took an actor orientated approach and started from urban eaters and then followed the food back through retailers, processors and transporters to the primary producers. Methodological lessons are derived from this process in particular the elaboration of the ‘ride-along’ as a research method. The Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP or the Platform) has published its highlights of 2016. Ensuring Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) for the increasing global population poses an enormous challenge to governments, NGOs, researchers, and the private sector.
