Online Course: Diaspora Investment in Agribusiness

16 January 2017 – 27 February 2017

Please find attached the announcement for an Online Course on Diaspora Investment in Agribusiness. This course will take place from 16 January - 27 February 2017 and is facilitated through agencies based in the Netherlands. The course aims to provide a number of ideas that can be used in discussions between migrants and relatives who engage in agriculture, processing and marketing. It concentrates on small initiatives which are within reach of migrant households. Although many migrants already invest in land, the focus of this course is on a better use of existing farmland and on all further steps – “from farm to fork”. The term “agribusiness” stands for all the phases of agricultural production from the preparation of the soil to the storage, transport, and the selling of the processed products.

Climate-Smart Farming Helps a Community in Kenya Thrive in the Face of Climate-Change

Published on Oct 18, 2016. 6 minute clip on YouTube. Produced by World Bank.

What does a climate-smart farm look like? Farmers in Kenya are cultivating farms that earn higher incomes and produce more nutritious food-- showing that climate-smart agriculture can help smallholders prosper in the face of climate change.

My question to you as AgriProFocus members would be:

- how innovative are the diversification practices shown in the video?

- do you know other (more innovative) cases similar to the practices shown in the video?

- do you know other cases, which include a more explicit entrepreneurship strategy?

Thank you!

Report regional workshop on Compost for Sustainable Agriculture, Nairobi

A must read for everyone with an interest in soil fertility!

Enhancing the knowledge and raising awareness about uses, challenges and potentials of organic nutrient sources was among the core objectives of a regional workshop by the Fertile Ground Initiative and CIAT held in Nairobi 12-13 September 2016.

The workshop “Compost for Sustainable Agriculture – facts, myths, potentials and business opportunities” addressed quality and quantity issues linked to the use of such resources, and how and if they can make existing farming systems more sustainable. It discussed the quality of compost samples that were gathered and analyzed beforehand; and discussed several existing and possible business models for resource recovery. More than 50 participants from different sectors including research, NGO’s, governmental organizations, private sector (mostly from the composting sector), networks and platforms with differe

Climate-smart Agricultural practice applied in Central America

Innovators' Pitch GACSA: several short videos

This video was among those shown during the Innovators' pitch session of the Annual Forum of the Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture (GACSA) in June 2016. It shows how the 'CSA prioritization framework' was applied in two Central American territories. In a step-by-step approach, the practices that were most effective were selected for further implementation.

See for the short video (subtitles in English):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMAKXiPsjfs&feature=youtu.be

Nicole's comment: The video refers to careful assessment of the costs and benefits of particular practices when farmers start using them. That area may be of interest to AgriProFocus members, as it is the basis of the business case of a new (climate-smart) Agricultural practice.

Agencies involved in the video: CATIE (Solutions for Environment and Development), Norway Embassy, CGIAR / CCAFS, TESAC, CIAT

Sustainable Palm Oil - Indonesia

SNV is taking up the challenge to increase palm oil production and improve smallholder farmers' livelihoods without further fueling the destruction of forests. SNV uses a three-fold approach: tracebility & forest monitoring; inclusive business for smallholder farmers; and working across the landsape.

A short video on this approach is available on YouTube, follow the link below.

The video was also shown during the Forum of the Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture (GACSA) in June 2016, as one of the Innovator's pitches.

This is the report of a debate organised by Agriterra in April 2016 in the context of the Small Farmers, Big Deal campaign.

One of the action points listed at the end of the report: “Developing the seed sector needs an integrated supply chain approach with better products (seeds) but also education and services that stimulate good farming practices, financing and market linkages. “
