Food loss and waste reduction

Three Agromisa publications

Given the predicted increase in global population and the threat of increasing food insecurity in many parts of the world, recent studies by FAO and World Resources Institute (WRI) have focused on where food losses occur and how this wastage can be brought under control. In 2011, FAO estimated that – measured in terms of calories - 24% of global food production was lost 'between farm and fork'. When this is defined in terms of losses that occur along the global food value chain the following figures emerge:

Food losses along food chain: global estimates

In contrast to the industrialized countries of North America, Europe and South and South East Asia where 61% of food is lost at the consumer level, the most significant food loss among the small-scale farming communities of Sub-Saharan Africa occurs during handling and storage. 76% of grains, pulses and vegetable products are lost in this way, in contrast to just 5% at the consumer l

A land without trees is like a people without hope

(Une terre sans arbres c'est comme un peuple sans espoir)

“5 million hectares in the Niger desert has been transformed into a lush landscape, where trees flourish, crops prosper and livestock thrives!” dr.Abasse Tougiane exclaims enthusiastically. “This is an area larger than the Netherlands!” We are present at the lecture about the successful initiative to regreen Niger, given by Abasse and his colleague Toudou Adam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The room is almost completely full; obviously not only officials of Foreign Affairs, but also scientists, delegates from NGO’s and representatives from the private sector are interested in the subject. The question on everyone’s mind is: “how can this be so successful where an initiative such as the Great Green Wall so sadly failed?”

The NL Ministry of Foreign Affairs, CRESA (Niger) and Both ENDS organized a lunch meeting “Regreening Niger – successes help farmer-led adaption

Tanzania and the East African Community: A comparative political economy

Cooksey, B. 2016. (Discussion Paper 186). Maastricht: ECDPM.

Key messages

•Tanzania has improved port efficiency, reduced the cost of transit trade and increased the export of manufactured goods to its neighbours in the EAC.

•But Tanzanian clearing and forwarding agents, travel and tourism companies and trades unions strongly resist deeper integration under the EAC Charter.

•Multiple non-tariff barriers further undermine regional trade, investment and service integration with Tanzania and Kenya the main offenders.

•To benefit from deeper regional integration, Tanzania needs to achieve greater international competitiveness, an improved business enabling environment and better logistics performance.

Sahel, Plan d’action pour un engagement renouvelé 2015-2020

L’Agence française de développement (AFD) a élaboré un plan d’action pour opérationnaliser sa stratégie au Sahel pendant la période 2015-2020.1 À travers ce plan, elle développe des propositions pour une action plus lucide, plus ambitieuse et plus adaptée aux contextes sahéliens en pleine mutation. Dans une logique de stabilisation d’ensemble, le document détaille les domaines de priorité d’un engagement renouvelé avec six pays sahéliens : le Burkina Faso, la Mauritanie, le Mali, le Niger, le Sénégal et le Tchad. Il porte une attention particulière aux fragilités : une pauvreté enracinée, une population jeune en pleine expansion, avec peu d’accès à une éducation de qualité et à l’emploi. Trois priorités opérationnelles sont ainsi identifiées : 1) accroître l’activité économique et les opportunités d’emploi pour les jeunes ; 2 ) répondre aux défis démographiques au sens large ;

Quality and innovation in food chains.

Lessons and insights from Africa

Editors: Jos Bijman and Verena Bitzer. Published: 2016 Pages: 274.

Improving product quality has become essential for food chains in developing countries. Quality and innovation in food chains: lessons from Africa presents a set of case studies on food quality improvement and innovation in African food chains, with cases from South Africa, Ethiopia, Benin, Uganda and Senegal.

Alexis MVUYEKURE Hi, I would like to prepare and submit a proposal but I need to partner with a Netherlands organization or private. Can you advise me on how I can get their contacts?

2 years 9 months ago

Nicole Metz Dear Alexis Mvuyekure, Thank you for your interest. In general, the best way to develop an eligible research consortium with both partners from your country (Burundi) and the Netherlands, is: a) start in your country first, finding the best Burundese partner(s) from practice or research to work with around the theme of your applied research; b) then contact relevant Dutch organisations or companies that are active in Burundi. You may ask your contacts in Burundi whether they are in touch with Dutch agencies. You may also get in touch with AgriProFocus Burundi to check whether they can give you some advice; c) Thereafter contact the headquarters of these Dutch organisations or companies, if applicable. I hope this helps? best regards, Nicole Metz (AgriProFocus, based in Netherlands)
