Dutch Development Results - Website!

With this website, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs presents the results that the Netherlands, together with national and international partners, has achieved in the field of development co-operation in 2016.

Have a look at this very informative website, with information on country level, countries and themes: http://www.dutchdevelopmentresults.nl/

Inclusive sustainable development

Investing in inclusive sustainable development pays off. This was also apparent in 2016. The number of people living in extreme poverty has been further reduced to less than 10% of the world’s population. In 2010, this figure was 22% (and in 1990 it was 47%).

Making trade and investment flows sustainable is no easy feat in an unpredictable global economy. Climate change is not only leading to long-term drought but also to major flooding. And for truly equitable development to exist, attention must be paid to the disadvantaged position of women and girls. The Netherlands conti

[Report] The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World

The vision of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development calls on all countries and stakeholders to work together to end hunger and prevent all forms of malnutrition by 2030. This ambition can only be fulfilled if agriculture and food systems become sustainable, so that food supplies are stable and all people have access to adequate nutrition and health. The start of the 2030 Agenda coincided with the launch of the United Nations Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016–2025), adding impetus to these commitments by providing a time-bound, cohesive framework for action.

This year’s edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World marks the beginning of a new era in monitoring the progress made towards achieving a world without hunger and malnutrition, within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, the report will monitor progress towards

The Future of Gender in Value Chains

Event posted by in Gender in Value Chains
  21 September 2017, 12:00-14:00
  AgriProFocus Office - Utrecht

For quite some time now, AgriProFocus’ members highlight the importance of gender equality as an objective (#SDG5) in their mission and programmes. Next to that, many focus on gender in their efforts to strengthen farmer entrepreneurs and the agribusiness sector. AgriProFocus has been very active with gender and specifically with gender in value chains, developing and implementing the gender in value chains approach. This has resulted in outputs such as the Gender in Value Chains toolkit and the development of coaching tracks, rolled out in several countries, in collaboration with members and key stakeholders such as F&S Advisory Services, FAO and embassies.

In the new strategic plan of the AgriProFocus network for 2018-2022, inclusive agribusiness is a key theme and gender is a cross-cutting subject and working field. We would like to invite you, as member of AgriProFocus, to help shape the future of this theme within the network, building on your experiences, expertise and needs. Duri

#Highlight2016: Campaign: Young Agripreneurz Ambassador 2016

Tina Napitupulu, (former) Country Coordinator, AgriProFocus Indonesia:

“The Young Agripreneurz Ambassador is a competition and campaign organised by the Innovation and Learning Community Youth and Agriculture under the AgriProFocus Indonesia network. The goal of the campaign was to promote agri-entrepreneurship among youth and make agriculture more attractive as a source of income. The chosen ambassadors set up a campaign to show the young generation that agribusiness is cool and there are young farmer entrepreneurs who have been successful in developing their agribusiness, especially in Indonesia. The candidates who entered the competition were provided with a series of trainings and classes, including IT and business, value chain analysis, but also training in leadership and public speaking. We visited companies, a school, and even held a press conference with much media attention.

Why is it so difficult for African farmers to have access to loans?

Check the study on Finance for Smallholders and the workshops held in different country networks

together with NpM Platform for Inclusive Finance and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform

Josien Sluijs, director of NpM, Platform for Inclusive Finance:

“Why is it so difficult for African farmers to have access to loans? If farmers are organised in formal groups, it is much easier for a financial institution to give a loan. The study ‘Finance for Smallholders’, carried out together with AgriProFocus and funded by the Food & Business Knowledge Platform gives insights. The study provides 14 models in Ethiopia, Mali, Rwanda and Uganda, in which NpM or AgriProFocus have managed to successfully finance farmers. AgriProFocus networks in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Benin and Mali, in cooperation with NpM, organised expert meetings to discuss the outcomes of the research. The meetings included a broad delegation of farming organiz

I can imagine MUWANGUZI SAMUEL When I read the overall conclusion of the participants of the workshops I see there is an urgent need for appropriate, flexible and timely financial services tailored to the production cycle of small farmers and that government support is needed through a regulatory framework and stimulation of innovation and finally that donors and investors are to take a facilitating role, also supporting innovation, partnership and high risk investments. Do you agree or do you ahve other suggestions?

Report ARF-2 projects International workshop and public seminar in Benin

In October 2016 ARF-2 project members met for a learning exchange during the second International workshop of the Food & Business Applied Research Fund (ARF) in Cotonou, Benin. Since the ARF project groups aim to ensure their research is taken up in society, they all have a private organization as project leader of their consortium. The projects also need to embed their research in society from the very beginning of the project.

To support these groups in achieving these goals, the first two days of the workshop focused on knowledge exchange and strategies of co-creation and research uptake. In addition a public seminar was organized on the role of nutrition in agricultural value chains. During this third day workshop lessons were brought further with food security professionals from Benin.

The three-day workshop was jointly organized by the Office of the Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP) and NWO-WOTRO, in

Our call to the next cabinet: Invest in Food Transition!

4th of July - Dutch Parliament - The Hague

A broad coalition of 45 parties urges the new Dutch cabinet in this manifesto to transition towards a sustainable food system, through which the Netherlands will contribute to green growth, healthy food for all, and a more peaceful world with less conflict and more stability. We ask the next government to invest in this, together with the private sector, consumers, civil society, farmers, education and science.

On July 4th a delegation of signatories presented the manifesto to the House of Representatives of the Committee on Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. You can watch the livestream (in Dutch) HERE.
