Report ARF-2 projects International workshop and public seminar in Benin

In October 2016 ARF-2 project members met for a learning exchange during the second International workshop of the Food & Business Applied Research Fund (ARF) in Cotonou, Benin. Since the ARF project groups aim to ensure their research is taken up in society, they all have a private organization as project leader of their consortium. The projects also need to embed their research in society from the very beginning of the project.

To support these groups in achieving these goals, the first two days of the workshop focused on knowledge exchange and strategies of co-creation and research uptake. In addition a public seminar was organized on the role of nutrition in agricultural value chains. During this third day workshop lessons were brought further with food security professionals from Benin.

The three-day workshop was jointly organized by the Office of the Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP) and NWO-WOTRO, in

Our call to the next cabinet: Invest in Food Transition!

4th of July - Dutch Parliament - The Hague

A broad coalition of 45 parties urges the new Dutch cabinet in this manifesto to transition towards a sustainable food system, through which the Netherlands will contribute to green growth, healthy food for all, and a more peaceful world with less conflict and more stability. We ask the next government to invest in this, together with the private sector, consumers, civil society, farmers, education and science.

On July 4th a delegation of signatories presented the manifesto to the House of Representatives of the Committee on Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. You can watch the livestream (in Dutch) HERE.

A good crop starts with good seed!

Every farmer will tell you that a good crop starts with good seed. Whatever the size of the company, the type of product or the type of consumer – the seed needs to generate a good yield, be resistant to diseases and produce a nutritious harvest.

The Dutch seed sector is active throughout the world. Dutch companies are the world’s number-one supplier of vegetable seed, seed for ornamental plants and seed potatoes. This success is a result of the unique Dutch approach of strong collaboration between businesses, government, inspection bodies and the research and education sector, creating a conducive climate for innovation and production.

Have a look at this brochure that contains examples of cooperation at the crossroads of aid and trade compiled by the Dutch government. It will give you an overview of all the aspects involved in making quality seed available to farmers worldwide.

Seeds are the key to sustainable and productive agriculture. With a seed you can feed the world.

The importance of seed as a factor in improving agricultural productivity and production is clear. The use of quality seeds contributes to a large extent to the increase in crop yields (30-40%). In Mali, we can recognize the essential place of Dutch seed companies like Bejo Seeds, which has become a reference through the quality of its seeds. The AgriProFocus network has positioned itself for the organization of seed fairs with Partners such as the Mali Seed Association and the Bejo Corporation. Thanks Anne Marie for sharing

Combatting the AMR Crisis in the African Livestock Sector

My colleagues Sylvia Natukunda business & partnership manager and Wim Goris network facilitator discuss steps needed to curb the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance in the livestock sector. This article appeared on FarmingFirst and the monthly newsletter of the World Farmers Organisation.

Antibiotics are crucial in human and animal health and yet growing levels of resistance to these drugs pose an increasingly serious threat to public health. One of the key contributing factors to such antimicrobial resistance is irresponsible use of antibiotics in the livestock sector.

AgriProFocus is a multi-stakeholder network with Dutch roots that promotes farmer entrepreneurship as a contribution to food and nutrition security in developing countries. Food quality is a growing concern in many of these countries. But the awareness of the threat of antibiotic resistance is still low.

Need for upscaling proper advice and monitoring

AgriProFocus Share-a-Slice meeting with network members - 20 April 2017

This informal gathering of AgriProFocus members was hosted by Heifer Netherlands and members exchanged experiences about their interventions to deal with the challenges of climate change in food and agriculture.

Pitches

ScopeInsight’s Maryse Blom started with the statement that ‘professionalism is the key, also for climate smart agriculture’. ScopeInsight has developed several tools to assess the professional quality of agribusinesses (incl SMEs) and trains partners in LMICs to use these effectively. The organization is a business intelligence provider, scoring companies on 8 clearly defined dimensions. As a separate service, they facilitate aligned capacity building that is provided by a group of organisations in the AMEA alliance. This set of services to support capacity building of farmers and SMEs in the agrifood sector is key as a basis to also tackle

Share a Slice: Climate Resilience - wat werkt voor boeren?

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Netherlands
  20 April 2017, 17:30-19:30
