Coaching fosters self-confidence
‘Using coaching tools allows us to understand the challenges people face, and to jointly identify goals and actions. Coaching is based on the assumption that the client is resourceful and active in realizing change. Coaching unleashes the coachee’s potential and fosters self-confidence. It is thus more sustainable than giving advice or training, which are less customized to the client’s needs and are usually provided over a shorter period of time.
Relationship of trust
What I personally enjoy about coaching is the relationship of trust with the clients. I like adapting myself to their different agendas. For example, some organizations begin with an internal focus: how can discriminatory practices be changed in their own organization? Others focus on their work in the field: are the women, men, and young people in the cassava, vegetable or fish value chain fairly remunerated for their contributions? How can we eliminate barriers to their participation?

2SCALE works in 9 countries of West and Eastern Africa and seeks to foster women’s participation by setting a 40% target in the agribusiness clusters they support. Partnership facilitators working within the program and their partners organizations, the Business support services, need to find innovative strategies to reach this target of female participation.
To ensure this, the first step is understanding the specific context in which they operate at cluster level. Using adapted versions of the Harvard gender analysis framework is an effective way to do this. During the training of coaches organized by AgriProFocus-Uganda in Kampala from Nov. 20 to 23, the group of trainees met with service providers to undertake an organizational scan. This guided self-assessment aims at determining if and how service providers meet the specific needs of female farmers working in different value chains. Although value chain support services are usually business-oriented and for-profit organizations, they acknowledged the relevance of looking at their internal capacities to deliver gender responsive services and reach-out to a female client-base.
