Irrigation may enable plants (i.e. crops, pasture) to be grown in a dry climate where it would not otherwise be possible, or it may supplement the existing rainfall and improve growth rates by extending the growth period of the plant, or by ensuring there is adequate moisture during critical periods when the plant is growing mo

Kenya’s Agricultural Sector at a Glance

Agriculture in Kenya plays a vital role in contributing to its economy. The sector brings in 65% of total export earnings to the country and provides the livelihood for more than 80% of the Kenyan population (employment, income and food security needs). More remarkably, the sector employs more than 40 per cent of the total population and more than 70 per cent of Kenya's rural people. Agriculture in Kenya is large and complex, with a myriad of parastatals, non-governmental, private and public sectors.

The sector is also a main drive of the non- agricultural sector. Operations such as tourism, transport, education, construction and other social services are in one way or the other intertwined with agriculture. It is also important to note, that Kenya’s population has increased significantly (growing from 10 million in 1970 to 40 million in 2012) and it is projected that in the next 20 years, that number will double to 83 million. Thus, these vital resources provide the backbone of many rural livelihoods and their stability is key to securing the well-being of their entire communities. Economic crises such as soaring food prices reduce real income, force the poor to sell their assets, decrease food consumption, and reduce their dietary diversity and access to safe and quality food. Disasters create poverty traps that increase the prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition. We have all heard that water is life, and indeed it is. What is often ignored, however, is the fact that water is also a key component of development. It is crucial for industry and agriculture, as well as for the health and quality of life of a nation’s citizens. Investment in efficient and sustainable infrastructure, for both urban and agricultural supply, has proven to yield great economic return.

Unfortunately, water has been taken for granted for too long in too many countries. Climate change, rising population growth and increased urbanization are predicted to change that reality severely. This training programme is intended to share the methods of the integrated water resources management practices and to encourage the best use of these precious resources in other regions of the world.

Given the escalating population growth, intensified cropping, widespread land degradation and shrinking agricultural land, sustaining agricultural production through improved soil management are critical to the issue of food security and poverty alleviation in developing countries.

Limited availability of additional land for crop production along with declining yield growth for major food crops have heightened concerns about agriculture's ability to feed the world population. Much currently cultivated land is being lost through soil erosion, nutrient depletion, desertification, deforestation, and salinization or overgrazing. As agricultural areas become even more crowded, arable land is likely to come under increasing pressure. This also sets the livelihoods of millions of subsistence farmer

Food loss and waste have many negative economic and environmental impacts. Economically, they represent a wasted investment that can reduce farmers’ incomes and increase consumers’ expenses. Environmentally, food loss and waste inflict a host of impacts, including unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions and inefficiently used water and land, which in turn can lead to diminished natural ecosystems and the services they provide.

While the number of food insecure population remains unacceptably high, massive quantities of food are lost due to spoilage and infestations on the journey to consumers. However, one of the major ways of strengthening food security is by reducing these losses. It is of high importance in the effort to combat hunger, raise
