“For me the thought of job-seeking was like a huge burden I couldn’t bear,” says the 30-year-old resident of Rurenge, Remera sector in Gatsibo District, Eastern Province.

So I decided to apply the knowledge gained from university to carry out my own income-generating activities to make more money, Mukazigama added.

Using urine and ash to control crop pests and diseases

Pests and diseases cause a substantial economic loss to crop farmers. Other than reducing yield and lowering harvest quality, pest and disease control increases production costs in terms of buying the chemicals to control them. Besides chemicals being expensive and not readily available, they also have adverse effects on the environment, humans and non-target organisms if not used properly, and as such, farmers prefer to use locally available materials (traditional methods) to mitigate pests and diseases which are cheaper, environmentally friendly, easily available and less harmful to humans and non-target organisms. As one of the traditional practice in Uganda, farmers use ash and urine to control a wide range of crop pests and diseases. This document provides a description of how different farmer apply this practice.

With drip irrigation, you can double your crop yield!

With irrigation you can grow vegetables in the dry season

Low cost drip irrigation saves water, lets you grow more tomatoes and double your profits.

Drip irrigation applies water drop by drop

The slow drip keeps the soil loose so water and air can reach the roots. Drip irrigation is not as stressful for the plants as flood irrigation, where the soil gets very wet all at once and then dries out. With drip irrigation the water reaches slowly and steadily deep into the soil. The drops do not touch the tomato flowers and do not knock them off.

Drip irrigation helps avoid diseases. And if you do spray a product against pests, drip irrigation does not wash it off.
