More and better milk

The business case for recognizing female Fulani as dairy producers

As announced in my Monday post of last week I will publish a set of case studies illustrating the business case for gender sensitive business strategies. Today I will share with you the experiences of the partnership of FrieslandCampina and 2SCALE in Nigeria. It shows the business case for recognizing female Fulani as dairy producers.

In Nigeria the 2SCALE programme is bringing in technology, training and market linkages to help the Fulani produce milk on a commercial scale for FrieslandCampina. How to secure the supply of enough milk of good quality turned out to be a challenge. Especially the bacterial contamination of fresh milk was a serious problem to be addressed.

This case shows how initially gender-based constraints of women related to the milk production were overlooked: lack of clean water to clean milking utensils, women not participating in training and the fact that women did not have a say o

Business arguments for a gender sensitive business strategy

This article presents three examples of companies experiencing the benefits of addressing gender in their business strategy. It is based on an interview with Stella Ling, my colleague from Fair & Sustainable Consulting, and me. The article is published in the glossy magazine Making Gender Work, cultivating diversity, of AgriProFocus. Read the magazine for more interesting articles!

Women bring better business results

Instead of focusing on how women benefit from economic development, the question can be turned around: how does business benefit from including women. Experts of Fair & Sustainable Consulting discuss three cases. Three companies, each playing a different role in the value chain, benefit from actively engaging women in their business.

Companies can have different roles in agricultural value chains: buyer, input supplier, or employer. All types of company can benefit from including women in their businesses, in many differe

Improved market relations for youth and women agripreneurs – A blog series on the importance of relational capacity strengthening in local agribusiness partnerships

In March 2017, 2SCALE consortium partner ICRA organised a review and capitalization workshop. ICRA agribusiness trainers, who have been training and coaching supply chain actors in the 2SCALE programme for several years, came together from Benin, Ghana, Mali and Nigeria. The objective was to collectively reflect and draw lessons from their work. The gathering included a write-shop to translate these lessons into stories. This resulted in a booklet of 15 stories illustrating the importance of strengthening functional capacities, i.e. relational and organisational “soft skills” that make local actors function better in their value chain as agribusiness partners. Each blog in this 6-weeks series showcases two stories from this booklet and highlights how the stories address a specific theme in agribusiness development. This week f

AgriProFocus / 2SCALE 'Youth in Agribusiness’ workshop in Hawassa

The new AgriProFocus Ethiopia Team was asked by two of AgriProFocus members (ICRA and BoP Innovation Center), to organize and facilitate a half-day learning workshop on ‘Youth in Agribusiness’ for their 2SCALE program on Thursday 18 January, 2018.

The purpose of this half-day workshop was for AgriProFocus Ethiopia to share the findings of its ‘Youth in Agribusiness Listening Project’ conducted in Ethiopia in the summer of 2016. Through this listening project, AgriProFocus Ethiopia interviewed 31 stakeholders in Ethiopia, and 3 different AgriProFocus country offices (Mali, Tanzania and Kenya), to learn of the role of youth in agribusiness, and ways that better synergy between actors could better promote youth engagement in agribusiness.

AgriProFocus Ethiopia Country Network Facilitator Sarah Assefa was the main facilitator of this half-day workshop that ended with an interactive group exercise. During this gr

2SCALE’s service delivery model offers opportunities to embed and share costs of support services within the value chain

The role of advisors in agribusiness is ever changing. Whereas conventional advisors mainly work with farmers, the 2SCALE programme turned these intermediaries into coaches of local business partnerships in a particular value chain. As this shift showed impressive results, such as the embedding of support costs within the value chain, 2SCALE explained the approach of its service delivery model and lessons learned from it in its second thematic paper “Strengthening business support services for agribusiness partnerships”.

Support services within agribusiness clusters

In 2SCALE, the role and terms of reference of agribusiness advisors moved from being mostly technical advisors for primarily farmers to facilitators and on-the-job coaches of local business actor networks formed as partnerships around a Producers’ Groups: the agribusiness clusters (ABCs). Consortium p

#HEFORSHE: 2SCALE AND AGRIPROFOCUS CELEBRATE MEN WHO EMPOWER WOMEN

Less than 5 percent of women in Mali own land, while more than 30 percent serve as heads of household responsible for providing food, healthcare, and school fees for their children. Because of their social vulnerability, particularly in the Ségou region, 2SCALE prioritizes strengthening women’s economic position in value chains and improving their access to agricultural training, seeds, fertilizers, and land.

Following this objective and in celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8), 2SCALE and the AgriProFocus network in Mali honored four men who demonstrate a proactive commitment to reduce gender-related inequalities in a vegetable partnership the project supports in Ségou. The recipients included:

• Mahamadou Nantoumé, CEO of Guina Agricole, for strengthening women’s access to quality agricultural inputs and phytosanitary services on preferential terms.

• Bakary Coulibaly, community leader, for promoting ge
