The 2016 Youth in Agribusiness Festival: ''Attracting & Retaining Youth in Agribusiness''

AgriProFocus Rwanda through its ''Youth in Agribusiness Innovation Community'' (led by RDI) in partnership with the University of Rwanda - College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (UR-CAVM) and Rwanda Youth in Agribusiness Forum (RYAF) organized the 2nd Youth in Agribusiness Festival on the 7th December 2016 at UR-CAVM, Busogo Campus.

The events' objectives were to:

- Create links and networking space among youth agribusiness entrepreneurs with big buyers, agribusiness industry leaders, investors, farmers’ federation and Research institutions.

- Encourage the agribusiness companies, private investors and financial institutions to invest in youth

Meru Agribusiness Expo 2016 Bigger and Better

You will agree with farmers from Meru that the Annual Agriculture trade fairs in Tanzania that takes place every first week of August (nane nane) are more than agriculture shows as it comprises exhibitions from almost all sectors. For this reason, three years ago, Farmers from Meru District in Arusha Tanzania with support from the Access to input working group of AgriProFocus Tanzania formed a platform dubbed Jukwaa la Wakulima Meru ( Meru Farmers Platform). They thirsted for a farmer friendly agriculture fair. Good for them, they have for 3 consecutive times quenched this thirst.

Présentation de l’analyse la situation des PMI agroalimentaire au Burundi

Depuis de longues années l’agriculture Burundaise est restée une agriculture de subsistance sans pouvoir amorcer une agriculture orientée vers le marché. Pour que cela puisse être possible, des actions de grandes envergures doivent être menées en amont et en aval pour mieux cibler les filières potentielles qui sont source du développement de l’agribusiness et de l’agro-industrie au Burundi.

Au cours d’un atelier organisé le 4 novembre, AgriProFocus a présenté le rapport d’une analyse de la situation des Petites et Moyennes Industries (PMI) agricoles. L’analyse avait pour objectif d’identifier les principaux PMI agricoles, les défis rencontrés, les avancés et ainsi formuler des propositions qui contribueraient au développement de l’agro-industrie au Burundi. Please find attached the announcement for an Online Course on Diaspora Investment in Agribusiness. This course will take place from 16 January - 27 February 2017 and is facilitated through agencies based in the Netherlands. The course aims to provide a number of ideas that can be used in discussions between migrants and relatives who engage in agriculture, processing and marketing. It concentrates on small initiatives which are within reach of migrant households. Although many migrants already invest in land, the focus of this course is on a better use of existing farmland and on all further steps – “from farm to fork”. Learning from the Youth in Agribusiness Internship Experience at AgriProFocus Ethiopia

From August to mid-September 2016, AgriProFocus Ethiopia took on two interns to investigate the role of youth in Ethiopian agribusiness, and to ask stakeholders how increased synergy among actors could lead to improved engagement of youth in agribusiness. The internship was an incredibly fruitful experience for both interns and host organization AgriProFocus.

The interns, Tihut Befkadu and Eyerusalem Kenea, were 4th year students of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development at Hope College of business Science and Technology. At the end of 6 weeks, they successfully interviewed over 26 stakeholders from different stakeholder groups – government ministries, rural agribusiness, urban agribusiness, and youth support organizations – working on youth and/or agribusiness issues in Ethiopia.
