AgriProFocus partners with Heifer International and Postharvest to explore gaps in Milk Chilling facilities

The importance of dairy farming and its contribution to the economic growth of a country cannot be over emphasized. In most countries, dairy farming is not only seen as a source of nutrients for millions of consumers but is also an important source of income for farmers and plays a significant role in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of these countries.

Therefore milk, and dairy are an important subsector in the national economies of many developing countries.

However, just like any other industry, the African dairy industry faces many challenges resulting from a number of factors, one particular challenge that has gripped the sector is lack of cold chain facilities.

Emerging dairy sectors in developing African countries cannot cool raw milk on-farm due to the lack of reliable electricity. Often the quality of the evening milk is lost because it doesn’t survive the overnight heat.

Curious to know how long it takes to get to the nearest city from anywhere on Earth?

Cities are a vital pathway to food and nutrition security. The Global Accessibility Map reveals how easy it is for people in different areas to access these resources - and that many people, especially in developing countries, often have to spend long hours to meet their basic needs.

Join us when Andy Nelson - Professor of Spatial Agriculture and Food Security at the University of Twente - presents this suprising and innovative visualisation of worldwide accessibility.

Nelson was asked in 2008 by the World Bank to calculate the number of people who lived within one hour travel time of a city.

‘I didn’t stop at one hour from a city, I kept going and ended up with a global map, which received a lot of attention. It was a completely new visualization of how connected we are,’ says Nelson. ‘We improved the quality of the map thanks to big advances in the available information and means, which we had at our di

Rural youth empowerment to mitigate international migration?

Understanding the relations between jobs and skilled youth in agriculture and migration

What is the relation between youth employment and education in agriculture and migration? And how should organizations working to improve food security via employment and education programs relate to the political agenda of mitigating (international) migration? These were questions discussed during the Community of Practice Youth in food systems Meet-up on September 11, 2018. Edukans and SNV presented insights from their experiences, followed by a lively debate with organizations active in this field – aiming at creating a better understanding of the eclectic relation between job creation, better skilled and qualified youth and the root causes of migration.

The insights from both Edukans and SNV confirm that it is difficult to pinpoint to a direct effect of skills training and education on migration decisions, as there are so many influencing
