MILLENNIAL AGRIPRENEURS IN ACTION 2018: Enhancing Skills and Exploring Opportunities

Supported by the Embassy of Kingdom of the Netherlands in Indonesia, Millennial Agripreneurs in Action (MAIA) is facilitated by AgriProFocus in joint cooperation with International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences (IAAS).

The program has objectives to building the capacity IAAS students on how to develop agribusiness program for community development project and increasing the participant’s awareness about opportunities in agriculture sector by showcasing real young agripreneurs who have run their own busines.

More than fifty students of eight local committees (LC) of IAAS participated in this three-day event. They are second and third-year students from Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Universitas Brawijaya (UNIBRAW), Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), Universitas Mataram, Universitas Lambung Mangkurat.

First sustainable Dairy Village of Indonesia initiated by Frisian Flag Indonesia

11 December 2018

Today the first Dairy Village of Indonesia was opened as part of the Dairy Development Programme of Frisian Flag Indonesia (FFI, a subsidiary of FrieslandCampina).

The dairy village, which was co-funded by the Netherlands’ Government and supported by the Indonesian Government, is a new, modern and sustainable farm in which 5 – 10 Indonesian farmers, who are part of the North Bandung Cow Farmers Cooperatives of Lembang, West Java, share the farm facilities including land and receive trainings together to improve efficiency and boost milk quality and productivity.

By supporting the setting up of the Dairy Village FFI shows its commitment to economically and socially empower Indonesian dairy farmers and to support the Indonesian Government to improve food security.

Chipata Business Drinks

On 23rd November, 2018, AgriProFocus Zambia held its second Business Drinks at Protea Hotel Chipata in Eastern Province under the theme “Enhancing Market Access through aggregation”.

The event created an opportunity for members and partners of the organisation to come together to promote themselves, to connect and share experiences.

Agribusinesses, agricultural development agents, government actors, research institutes and other relevant agricultural actors are continually represented in these events.

This edition of the Business Drinks which was co-hosted by AgriProFocus partner Agriterra, attracted over 30 participants who represented different sections of the agricultural sector.

It was also interesting to have our development partner Heifer at the event.

Agriterra's top cooperatives

The Top 74 is a yearly ranking of Agriterra’s clients based on their performance. The clients are evaluated a financial ratio analysis, client’s contribution to Agriterra’s 2020 Goals, an evaluation by the business advisor, non-financial performance indicators, the availability of required documentation and a financial health check. Each category has its own weight, leading to a total score per client. 

156 clients could be analysed, of which 110 cooperatives, 27 farmer organisations and 19 savings & credit cooperatives. See below overview in pdf.

Godfrey LUtwama It's always good to rank such organizations as it boosts performance but clear parameters should be set to understand wheather Farmers have improved financially, yield per hectare, market access , financial base of coorpertives etc...these areas acts as a basis for future engagements of other partners

FrieslandCampina and Agriterra continue their cooperation

Agriterra and FrieslandCampina will be working together over the next five years to improve the business operations of farmers in Asia and Africa. To this end, the organizations have signed a new cooperation agreement. The agreement was signed on Monday 29 October by Hein Schumacher, CEO of FrieslandCampina, and Marc Calon, chairman of the board of Agriterra. This has extended the cooperation between the two organizations for a period of 5 years.FrieslandCampina and Agriterra have been working together since 2012 and share the ambition to improve the livelihood of dairy farmers in Asia and Africa by sharing Dutch dairy expertise.

AgriProFocus Zambia and Agriterra kick off Aggregation Capacity Building for Climate Smart Farmers

Appreciation of the role of aggregation and developing action plans towards its implementation was the focus of a workshop held by Agriterra and facilitated by Agriprofocus in Lundazi and Katete.

The capacity building which was Kicked off with a training workshop in August in Lundazi and Katete, provided an opportunity to deepen and expand farmer engagement with focus on Aggregation of produce.

The workshop brought together participants from leadership positions from over 8 cooperatives that are supported by the Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV) under its Sustainable Integrated Land Management Solutions project (SILMS). The SILMS project is focused on improving market access of farmers practicing climate smart agriculture interventions.The capacity building programme in aggregation is aimed at enhancing market linkages.

Holland Pavilion at the 13th National Agrishow 2018

From the 27thJune until the 01July of June 2018, Dutch companies and organizations, active in agri-business in Rwanda, demonstrated their knowledge and expertise to the public at the 13th National Agricultural Show held at Mulindi show Ground, Kigali, Rwanda.

The agriculture show was organized for the 13th year by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) in Rwanda. The theme year was: ‘Invest in Innovations and Agribusiness to Transform Agriculture’. How do youth organise themselves, and (how) can we support them?

On 22nd of May 2018, a Community of Practice (CoP) meetup around youth in agribusiness and food systems was facilitated by AgriProFocus and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP). AgriProFocus New Strategy presentation Meeting

On Wednesday 9th May 2018 at Chez Lando Hotel, AgriProFocus Rwanda invited all Dutch members working in Rwanda to a half day workshop in which AgriProFocus Rwanda wanted to share with the members new directions of the network.

The objectives of the workshop were:

Myanmar youth present innovative business ideas at Agrifood Bootcamp Showcase event

On Friday, April 6, we successfully hosted the Agrifood Bootcamp Showcase Event in Nay Pyi Taw. The Showcase event was the closing of the Agrifood Bootcamp. 5 groups of highly talented Myanmar youth impressed the audience and the highlevel jury with their innovative business solutions for agrifood challenges in Myanmar.

An exciting training program

The Agrifood Bootcamp is a project organized by AgriProFocus Myanmar in collaboration with the Dutch agribusiness companies and organizations De Heus, East West Seed, Agriterra, Fresh Studio and ICCO Cooperation. Together, we supported Myanmar youth between 18 and 35 to participate in an exciting week long training program from April 2 to 6. Accomplished the final Agrifood Teaser Workshop with moment of inspiration by the youth voice

On 7 February 2018, AgriProFocus Myanmar successfully hosted the Final Agrifood Bootcamp Teaser Workshop at Yangon University of Economics. Wow!!! We were impressed by the active input and high quality of the contributions from young people to solve the various challenges presented by the companies and organizations. There were 165 participants from Yangon University of Economics and other interested youth.. When we announced the statement “ I can contribute to developing the agriculture sector with my educational background”, more than 70% of the participants stand up and agreed the statement.

Youth raised their voices at Agrifood Bootcamp teaser workshop

AgriProfocus Myanmar proudly convened the 2nd Agrifood Boootcamp Teaser workshop at Yezin Agricultural University (Nay Pyi Taw) on February 3, 2018. It was a great event for the participating companies and organizations to meet the fresh young scholars, to hear what is their idea on their specific challenges. There were 349 participants from Yezin Agricultural University, University of Veterinary Science, Co-operative department and MoALI. All of them agreed to the statement that agribusiness is an interesting way to get a good career.
