ASEAN Exchange Visit on Coconut Emphasizes the Importance of Cooperatives in Increasing Employment in Rural Areas

Yogyakarta, 24-25 October 2018 – The ASEAN Foundation through ASEAN Farmers’ Organisations Support Programme (AFOSP) in coordination with Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs of the Republic of Indonesia and ASEAN Centre for the Development of Agricultural Cooperative (ACEDAC) organised today the ASEAN Exchange Visit program under the theme “Strengthening the Role of Agricultural Cooperatives in the Coconut Value Chain Management and Job Creations in Rural Areas.” The program aims to inspire farmer empowerment in ASEAN by promoting cross-sectoral collaboration among farmers, governments, private entities, financial institutions and academicians/universities.

The 2-day program serves as an avenue for more than 50 participants consist of government representatives of ASEAN Member State, cooperative leaders, private sector and academia to have brief insights on the challenges

VACANCY: PROJECT MANAGER for Sustainable Land Use and Climate Protection in ASEAN

The German Organisation for International Cooperation (GIZ) is looking a project manager for a regional project Sustainable Land Use and Climate Protection in ASEAN (CSLU). This position will be assisting the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) to strengthen its coordinating role in contributing to global and national climate policy processes in the area of climate-friendly and resilient land use in agriculture and forestry. The job includes mainly three areas of activities: To improve the coordinating role synergies between agriculture and forestry as part of land use will be created and enhanced and their importance for climate protection and adaptation to climate change will be highlighted. Calling for Applications: ASEAN Science and Technology Fellowship

Co-organised by ASEAN Foundation and USAID, the ASEAN Science and Technology Fellowship 2018 aims to foster and institutionalize a culture of scientific-based policy making throughout ASEAN region. It offers unique career advancement opportunity for early and mid career scientists who are ASEAN citizen to be placed for a year in government line ministries within their home countries, where they can influence and contribute to policy formulation. 

Applications are open until April 20, 2018. Fellows will get monthly stipend $1,200, capacity building and other interesting opportunities. Candidates from academic/research, industry, government, NGOs or others are welcome to apply!

ASEAN Young farmer leaders commit to ensure access to land for rural youth

ၿမန္မာဘာသာၿဖင္႕လည္း ေအာက္တြင္ဖတ္ရႈေလ႔လာႏိုင္ပါသည္။

Young farmer leaders from ASEAN countries gathered for the ASEAN-EU Youth Forum held on October 25-26, 2017 in ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta, Indonesia. Young leaders are concerned that the exodus of rural youth causes serious problems. They signed a declaration to ensure rural youths’ access to land through the provision of a national legal framework and a regional guideline facilitating easier transfer of land rights to young farmers.

Engaging ASEAN Coffee Player in ALSPEAC

Last 20 – 21 July, AgriProFocus Indonesia participated in ASEAN Learning Series and Policy Engagement on Agricultural Cooperatives (ALSPEAC) and meet coffee stakeholders from ASEAN countries. The event discussed the challenges and opportunities in coffee production, processing and marketing in ASEAN region through panel discussion on ASEAN coffee standard, best practices, existing policy, field visit activity, group discussion, and also cupping and brewing performances. In second day, we were visited coffee plantation in downhill of Mount Merapi and devided into four groups to observe and make recommendation regarding soil condition, agronomy of the coffee tree, shading tree condition, pest and natural enemy management. This session were very interesting as participants from different countries have various knowledge as well as experience to be shared to each other.
