The power of multi-sectoral governance to address malnutrition

Article by SNV

Improved nutrition is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Chronic malnutrition, including stunting, is an important example of a global challenge that spans multiple sectors, including health, agriculture and food systems, water and sanitation, education and gender. Addressing malnutrition requires a strong focus on governance, involving coordinated actions by many actors across sectors and across levels of government.

Recognising the multifaceted nature of malnutrition, SNV in partnership with the Centre for Development Innovation of Wageningen UR (CDI) and the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), and funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) developed and implemented the Sustainable Nutrition for All (SN4A) project in Zambia and Uganda.
A central pillar of the SN4A project is to support national, multi-sectoral policies by developing and strengthening district and sub-district mult

Course on Making agriculture work for food and nutrition sec

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Netherlands
  13 November 2017 to 24 November 2017 - All Day Event
  Wageningen the Netherlands

Fellowship opportunity

Despite the world-wide increase of food availability 1 out of 3 people are malnourished due to undernourishment, micronutrient deficiencies and/or overweight. Evidence shows that malnutrition has life-long detrimental impacts on learning capacity, productivity and income-generating potential of populations.
The sustainable development goals aim to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by year 2030.
Agriculture plays a key role in the provision of food and nutrition security. But agricultural programs and policies do not automatically lead to better nourished populations. In some cases these programs and policies can even be detrimental to the nutritional situation of vulnerable groups. Agricultural programs and policies need to take nutrition outcomes into account.

Course on Fisheries governance for food security with fellow

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Netherlands
  23 October 2017 to 10 November 2017 - All Day Event
  Wageningen The Netherlands

Fellowship opportunity

Fisheries contributes to food security and nutrition and plays a vital role in global, national and rural economies.

Fish is highly nutritious and serves worldwide as a valuable supplement in diets lacking essential proteins, vitamins and minerals. The primary threats undermining the food and nutrition security potential of fisheries results from ineffective management coupled with poor conservation of habitats. To enhance the contribution of fisheries to food and livelihoods security a transition towards more people centred governance approaches is needed. Involvement of the public, civil society and private sector is required to develop incentives for sustainable ecosystem management and to ensure that the role of fisheries in reaching global food production is taken into account.

Market demand and agribusiness clusters are considered to be important vehicles for poverty reduction, attaining food security and creating rural wealth. Loss of genetic resources has resulted in major concerns about future food and nutrition security. The vulnerability of agricultural systems towards pests, diseases and climate change makes the topic urgent, and has led to the development of a range of conservation strategies. Community Biodiversity Management (CBM) distinguishes itself from other conservation strategies by enhancing social interdependence, collaboration, adaptability and autonomy.

Food security in an urbanising society

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Netherlands
  04 September 2017 to 15 September 2017 - All Day Event
  The Netherlands

Today already more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. By 2050 this will be risen to two-thirds. The continuous increase of urban population is due to factors like rural-urban migration, natural disasters or livelihood insecurities. Providing food and nutrition security for the rapidly expanding populations in the world’s cities is a pressing challenge in this changing world. Delivering nutritious food to cities is a complex problem that is also challenged by natural resource scarcity, climate change, and population growth, which affect food systems globally.

For this events fellowships are available.

Course on Lost Harvest and wasted food

  Wageningen, The Netherlands

Stark contrasts exist in how we manage the food we have available. While in developing and transition countries food losses mainly happen post-harvest, in the urban and wealthier communities good food is wasted in retail stages of the supply chain and by consumers. Strategies to minimize food losses and waste along the chain can contribute to food security and sustainable food production.
