About the NDC partnership

In 2015, the world endorsed the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These historic accords presented countries with an unprecedented opportunity to align the climate and sustainable development agendas to spur economic growth and improve the livelihoods of all people.

Nations signal their commitments to the Paris Agreement through Nationally Determined Contributions (or NDCs) - each country's strategy to cut its own greenhouse gas emissions and build resiliency against the negative effects of a changing climate. Countries will revise their NDCs every five years to become more ambitious to limit Earth's temperature rise and adapt to its impacts.

The countries on the below map joined the ndc partnership. Go to the NDC website for the interactive map, knowledge portal and tools on climate change: https://ndcpartnership.org/countries-map

Wim Goris PS: forgot to mention that the Netherlands (minister Sigrid Kaag of Foreign Affairs) is co-chair of the NDC partnership, per 2019.

Gender, agriculture and climate change:

Climate change is a global threat to sustainable development and food security. In developing countries, dependence on rain-fed agriculture and natural resources as the main livelihood strategy, is making farmers, especially women, extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is an approach to ensure food security, increase productivity and incomes, build resilience to climate change, and reduce emissions from agricultural systems. Gender, however, is a critical dimension of CSA that cannot be ignored as gender inequalities can hinder the transition to CSA for millions of farmers.

To see transformative changes in agriculture and food systems in a changing climate, all stakeholders, including scientists, governments and development practitioners, must tackle gender issues. By mainstreaming gender into CSA, identifying the constraints and needs of women and men farmers, and providing opportunities to accelerate CSA a

Event Details: Food Security and Climate Change Training

INTRODUCTION

Food insecurity and climate change are the two major global challenges humanity is facing, and climate change is increasingly being perceived as one of the greatest challenges for food security. This is because reduces the productivity of the majority of existing food systems and harms the livelihoods of those already vulnerable to food insecurity. Conversely, agricultural activities including indirect effects through deforestation and other forms of land conversion account for about one-third of total global warming potential from GHG emissions today. This training is thus intended to equip participants with strategies to realize food security, reduce climate change effects in agriculture, as well as reduce the contribution of the agriculture sector to climate change presently and in the future.

DURATION

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • At the end of the training, the learner will be able to:

Lira Farm Clinic to focus on citrus and dairy farming:

Dr Turyagenda reveals that citrus and dairy are the most sought after agribusiness enterprises in northern Uganda but unfortunately they are threatened by the climate change scourge.

“They are exposed to the drought in the area which makes their production difficult for the farmers,” he said. “They are exposed to the drought in the area which makes their production difficult for the farmers,” he said.

“The Farm Clinic will try to teach the crop agronomy, disease and pest management, value addition and post harvest and handling of citrus which will offer a lasting remedy,” Dr Turyagenda added.

He stresses that the dairy sector in northern Uganda may not be booming as it is in the western and central regions but there is light at the end of the tunnel, especially with farming initiatives like the Farm Clinics.

“The dairy production was greatly affected by the Lord’s Resistence Army (LRA) insurgence, so it needs rehabilit

North farmers to get modern farming training

TRYNESS TEMBO, Lusaka, July 5, 2018
THE Ministry of Agriculture targets to teach over 300,000 farmers in Northern Province in modern farming practices to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Northern Province agricultural coordinator Charles Kapalasha said most farmers in the area are practising old methods which are negatively affecting crop output.
In an interview yesterday, Mr Kapalasha said rice farmers are still using the broadcast method, which is a system that involves scattering seed, by hand or mechanically, over a relatively large area which does not give room for weeding.
He also said the ministry will teach farmers to adopt conservation farming to help them increase their production and CLICK TO READ MORE

Uganda Releases First Partnership Plan For Climate Change (NDC)

The Government of Uganda has released its first strategy to deliver on commitments under the Paris Agreement, known as the ‘Uganda Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Partnership Plan’, which aims at combating climate change.

According to the plan, Uganda seeks to mainstream climate resilience across sectors and develop early warning systems and robust monitoring systems by 2020, much earlier than originally planned.

“To reduce its impact on climate change, Uganda has committed to reducing its emissions by 22% come 2030, with actions focused in energy, forestry, and wetlands.” the plan reads in part.

Launching the master plan, the first Deputy Prime Minister General Mosese Ali assured the development partners that Government of Uganda is committed to ensuring that climate change is mitigated due to its devastating impacts to the country’s economy.

Wim Goris Hi Marion, thanks for sharing. I added the tag ndc (=nationally determined contribution to the Paris agreement on reducing carbon emissions. I also like to share a link to a map about the partnership: https://ndcpartnership.org/countries-map

Climate Change and Agriculture Course

30th July - 3rd August 2018

Indepth Research Training Facility, Nairobi, Kenya.

In recent decades, it has been observed that there is a rapid change in climatic conditions which has resulted to several negative effects on human activities and development especially in agriculture and the environment. There is little awareness and understanding of the changing world in the rural areas where majority of agriculture and rural development activities are carried out.

Officers involved in agricultural and rural development activities do not have adequate capacity to inform and manage issues resulting from climate change. Thus, there is need to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills in managing the effect of climate change for the development of agriculture and the environment.

This course is intended for audiences working in governments, funding agencies, and research and development facilitating non-government and Civil society organizations.

Circular Economy : Strategic reasons why we should make it work Globally.

The effort to find global solutions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should be urgent in 2018 than it has never been. Given the rapid growth of world population and the shrinking economic fortunes, unsustainable food production coupled with unstable political environment in most developing countries, call for change of habits and strategies in seeking solution to persistent social problems the world faces today is mandatory. The challenges we face have been created and build over time; in deed the world reluctance to solve them accelerated their compound interest, these social evils as Daniel Goleman calls them in his book Focus can be solved but again as Albert Einstein opines “ We cannot solve our current problems with the same level of thinking that created them.” Hence we need new thinking.

This new thinking in my opinion, just like many other thinkers have indicated lies in embracing Circular

NEW Policy Brief: Gender equality in climate change adaptation and disaster resilience in Vietnam

Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) are vital to Vietnam’s sustainable development and long-term resilience. The poor and vulnerable, particularly women, children and elderly, experience disproportionate impacts of climate change. To raise awareness and highlight the importance of gender equality in climate and disaster resilience in the context of the post-2015 development agenda, SNV Vietnam jointly initiated and developed a policy brief together with UN Women, UNDP, CARE and Oxfam in Vietnam. In November 2017, SNV introduced the policy brief at COP23 in Bonn, Germany, to highlight the important intersection of climate change, disaster resilience and gender at the global platform.

The policy brief addresses key issues of gender inequality in CCA and DRR with the intention of strengthening gender equality in policies and plans and their implementation. It draws on t
