Food security in an urbanising society

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Netherlands
  04 September 2017 to 15 September 2017 - All Day Event
  The Netherlands

Today already more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. By 2050 this will be risen to two-thirds. The continuous increase of urban population is due to factors like rural-urban migration, natural disasters or livelihood insecurities. Providing food and nutrition security for the rapidly expanding populations in the world’s cities is a pressing challenge in this changing world. Delivering nutritious food to cities is a complex problem that is also challenged by natural resource scarcity, climate change, and population growth, which affect food systems globally.

For this events fellowships are available.

Course on Lost Harvest and wasted food

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Ethiopia
  11 September 2017 - 09:00 to 22 September 2017 - 17:00
  Wageningen, The Netherlands

Stark contrasts exist in how we manage the food we have available. While in developing and transition countries food losses mainly happen post-harvest, in the urban and wealthier communities good food is wasted in retail stages of the supply chain and by consumers. Strategies to minimize food losses and waste along the chain can contribute to food security and sustainable food production.

Seminar: How to ensure access to good food for all in a rapidly urbanising world

The world is becoming increasingly urban. Today, more of us live in cities than in rural areas. It is expected that by 2050 two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities. Providing food and nutrition security for the rapidly expanding populations in the world’s urban areas is a pressing challenge, due to the increasingly interconnected challenges of resource scarcity, climate change and natural disasters which affect food systems globally. Against the background of these developments, achieving urban food and nutrition security calls for integrated and innovative solutions.

This seminar will take place in the Impulse building on the campus of Wageningen UR, from 09.00 to 14.00 hrs, including a lunch buffet. Participation is free.

Linking emergency aid to food and nutrition security, Avoiding pitfalls of help-indcued dependency

There has been a substantial increase in the number and impact of natural disasters such as earth quake of Nepal April 2015. But also man-made crisis and disasters are increasing and many conflicts have remained unresolved. Emergency or food aid, although necessary, is often criticised as a donor driven response, creating dependency in the short term, and undermining initiatives for local agricultural development in the longer term. Usually, only a few incentives exists to encourage people to build a better life and prevent them from falling back into avoidable situations where they need assistance again.

Interested candidates can apply for admission to the training via the website. Costs for the two week training are 3,450 euro. After reviewing, Centre for Development Innovation will send you the admission letter and instructions on how to continue.
