Access to Seeds launches second Index

24 seed companies were ranked on how well they serve smallholder farmers in South and Southeast Asia

Access to Seeds has launched its latest Index, evaluating and ranking seed companies according to their efforts to improve access to quality seeds of improved varieties for smallholder farmers. The results of the South and Southeast Asia (SSEA) Index were announced during the Asian Seed Congress attended by members of the Asia Pacific Seed Association (APSA) including private seed companies and national seed associations.

Out of 24 companies, East-West Seed garnered the highest score which takes into account the indicators of Commitment, Performance, Transparency and Leadership for 7 measurement areas: Governance & Strategy, Genetic Resources, Intellectual Property, Research & Development, Seed Production, Marketing & Sales, and Capacity Building. Myanmar youth present innovative business ideas at Agrifood Bootcamp Showcase event

On Friday, April 6, we successfully hosted the Agrifood Bootcamp Showcase Event in Nay Pyi Taw. The Showcase event was the closing of the Agrifood Bootcamp. 5 groups of highly talented Myanmar youth impressed the audience and the highlevel jury with their innovative business solutions for agrifood challenges in Myanmar.

An exciting training program

The Agrifood Bootcamp is a project organized by AgriProFocus Myanmar in collaboration with the Dutch agribusiness companies and organizations De Heus, East West Seed, Agriterra, Fresh Studio and ICCO Cooperation. Together, we supported Myanmar youth between 18 and 35 to participate in an exciting week long training program from April 2 to 6. We selected a talented and extremely motivated group of 40 participants with diverse backgrounds: Students from 5 different universities, young professionals and agri-entrepreneurs.

We are a group of professional seedling growers located in Kihonda, Morogoro region. Our team is proudly equipped with two young crop scientists and several field assistants. We are dealing with the seedlings of all horticultural crops i.e Tomato, Sweet pepper, Onion, garlic, Pawpaw etc. 

What you are needed to do is to place an order by naming the variety of your choice. However, we can assist you in determining the best variety to establish. We offer farmer friendly price i.e  tomato and Sweet pepper seedlings are priced  @ Tshs 350/= for more than 7000 seedlings, @ Tshs 400/= for  3500-7000 seedlings, Tshs 450/= for 1750-3500 seedlings,@ Tshs 500/= for less than 1750 seedlings and @ Paw paw seedling is priced at @ Tshs 4500/=. 

When placing the order, it has to be paid on two installments, first when placing/ initiating the order, and the last is paid when receiving the well grown seedlings after three to five weeks.

Accomplished the final Agrifood Teaser Workshop with moment of inspiration by the youth voice

On 7 February 2018, AgriProFocus Myanmar successfully hosted the Final Agrifood Bootcamp Teaser Workshop at Yangon University of Economics. Wow!!! We were impressed by the active input and high quality of the contributions from young people to solve the various challenges presented by the companies and organizations. There were 165 participants from Yangon University of Economics and other interested youth.. When we announced the statement “ I can contribute to developing the agriculture sector with my educational background”, more than 70% of the participants stand up and agreed the statement.

Agrifood Bootcamp: Linking Myanmar young talent to Dutch agribusiness organizations

On January 26, AgriProFocus will launch the Agrifood Bootcamp, a project to link Myanmar students and young professionals between age 18 and 35 to Dutch businesses and organisations in the agrifood sector. The objective is to increase awareness of youth about the opportunities in agribusiness, improve linkages and exchange between Myanmar youth and Dutch and Myanmar companies and organisations and to develop skills and capacities required in the agribusiness sector. During the intensive Agrifood Bootcamp week we will challenge participants to come up with innovative solutions to solve agribusiness issues. The winning team receives a leadership training package to become Youth Ambassadors.

Mung bean producers to receive international help in cultivation, diversification

Children of Myanmar farmers receive Simon N. Groot Scholarship

Four young and deserving students from Myanmar received a full scholarship to support their undergraduate study in agriculture. The students, coming from various townships in Myanmar, all come from a family of farmers.

Launched during East-West Seed’s 35th anniversary, the “Simon Groot Scholarship Program for Agriculture" provides an opportunity for 35 students - sons and daughters of farmers - to pursue an agriculture degree in public agricultural colleges and universities.

First successful exchange between agribusinesses and State Agricultural Institutes (SAIs)

On Wednesday, June 28, Aeres, MDF and AgriProFocus organized a workshop about modernizing and diversifying the curriculum of the SAIs and assessing the requirements of the private sector for future students. For the SAI teams, it was the first time to directly exchange ideas with representatives from agribusinesses. 

The Myanmar Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MoALI) and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its funding partner NICHE work together to strengthen agricultural schools in Myanmar. The NICHE programme in Myanmar concerns the strengthening of 5 pilot State Agricultural Institutes (SAIs) with an outreach to the 9 other SAIs. Hands-on support will be provided with curriculum review, teacher development and ICT needs. It also ensures that the SAI curriculum will be better tailored to job profiles and real job needs in the regions.
