Youth development and entrepreneurship in rural Ethiopia

On June 1st 2017, a fireside chat event organized by AgriProFocus and BlueMoon Ethiopia was held at BlueMoon Ethiopia office in Addis Ababa.

AgriProFocus facilitated the Kickoff the Surviving Tree Project at Mintesenot Urban Agriculture

In Ethiopia tree seedling are planted every year but the survival rate is very low. The Kickoff the Surviving Tree Project was organizing a tree competition event aimed at speed up tree planting with a higher rate of survival. The Surviving Tree Competition and tree planting activities took place at Mintesenot Urban Agriculture (a youth-run integrated urban farm, with permaculture vegetable plots, poultry, pigs, sheep and cows) hosted a tree planting event on the side of Kebena river. The event were opened by the song by the Ethiopian Environmental Club children on Endemic trees, Global warming, River health and Sustainable development continued from the song indigenous tree seedlings like Cordi Africana (Wanza), Croton (Bisana), Juniperus Procera (Tsid) , Olive (Weyra) etc from seedling supplier at Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources were planted. Strengthening linkages between SAIs and private sector

MDF Asia, Aeres and AgriProFocus Myanmar would like to invite you to participate in a workshop on Wednesday, June 28, on modernizing and diversifying the curriculum of State Agricultural Institute (SAIs) and assessing the requirements of the private sector for future students.

The Myanmar Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MoALI) and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its funding partner NICHE work together to strengthen agricultural schools in Myanmar. The NICHE programme in Myanmar concerns the strengthening of 5 pilot State Agricultural Institutes (SAIs) with an outreach to the 9 other SAIs. Hands-on support will be provided with curriculum review, teacher development and ICT needs. It also ensures that the SAI curriculum will be better tailored to job profiles and real job needs in the regions.

Nakasongola gets agricultural college

The training complex whose ground breaking ceremony was performed in Nakasongola District over the weekend, is to train agriculturalists in Uganda and the East African region.

The implementation is being undertaken by Seohyun Foundation, a Korean Missionary NGO that is headed by its founder Dr. Lee Hyunsoo who is also the brainchild behind the project.

The first lady and minister for education and sports, Janet Museveni who was represented by the State Minister for Higher education, J.C.Muyingo, lauded the Koreans for choosing to establish the institution in Uganda and investing in training the youths as entrepreneurial farmers.

Mrs.Museveni said in her speech that was read for her by the State Minister for Higher Education, J.C.Muyingo that the proposed Nakasongola based Agricultural College could enable Uganda realize its agricultural potential and dream to become the food basket of the East African Region.

East-West Seed launch agricultural scholarship program to celebrate 35th anniversary

To celebrate its 35th anniversary, vegetable seed company East-West Seed is launching a scholarship program that will enable 35 children of farmers to pursue undergraduate courses in agriculture.

The Simon Groot Scholarship will support farmers children that study agriculture related subjects. Named the "Simon Groot Scholarship Program for Agriculture", the program will provide an opportunity for 35 students - sons and daughters of farmers - to pursue an agriculture degree in public agriculture colleges and universities.

"Agricultural education is one of the most powerful investments we can make for the future,” says Simon Groot, founder of East-West Seed. "We must encourage farmers' children to carry on the their parents' legacy by equipping them with scientific and practical knowledge to turn farming into a thriving business and a sustainable source of livelihood for their communities."

Wim Goris Actually the lecture was about us. I showed the AgriProFocus video on our network approach, collected questions and answers. Some 16 students were multitasking, they registered for this online network during class !

Narrative Report on NICHE project at SAI Shwebo Township

State Agriculture Institute (Shwebo) situated on Shwebo- Yeu older road of Shwebo in Sagaing Region. It was opened dated on 18-1-1982. There is 488 students in Academic Year 2015-16, and number of staff 107 inclusion teachers. It is total land area 200 acres and cultivated land is low land ( Paddy) 56 acres and Upland 8.8 acres, Animal husbandry 22.6 acre including fish ponds, Horticulture 22,6 acres and Fallow land 48 acres and rest acres 42 acres is Building and road.

Current situation is there is one library but no facilities, laboratories are lack of facilities For example- In Chemistry Lab, They needs pH meter for soil test box , moisture test , event balance is very old. Multimedia class room also empty materials even no tables and chairs. Although there is 5 computers, they can used 3 computer for only office uses. One projector was used only demonstration.

Makerere University entered a partnership with The MasterCard Foundation to offer scholarships to 1,000 academically bright but economically disadvantaged youth from Africa to study at Makerere University from 2013 to 2023. This is a project worth US $ 20,989,965.15 implemented at Makerere University with the aim of developing the next generation of African Leaders and also to promote the strategic objectives of Makerere University and The MasterCard Foundation in contributing to Africa's higher education sector and development. National Poultry Training Centre Officially Opened in Bishoftu

Yesterday, June 9, the brand-new National Poultry Training Centre opened in Bishoftu in the presence of the State Minister of Livestock, HE Dr. Gebreegziabher Gebreyohannes; the Ambassador of the Embassy of the Netherlands to Ethiopia, Mrs. Lidi Remmelzwaal; the Director of the EIAR, Dr. Fantahun Mengistu; the chairman of the Ethiopian Poultry Development Association, Mr. Fanta Terefe, and many other Dutch and Ethiopian distinguished guests.

The success of establishing this first of its kind poultry center is the result of a cooperation between stakeholders the sector from both the Netherlands and Ethiopia.
