INTRODUCTION

Given the escalating population growth, intensified cropping, widespread land degradation and shrinking agricultural land, sustaining agricultural production through improved soil management is critical to the issue of food security and poverty alleviation in developing countries.

Limited availability of additional land for crop production along with declining yield growth for major food crops have heightened concerns about agriculture's ability to feed the world population. Much currently cultivated land is being lost through soil erosion, nutrient depletion, desertification, deforestation, and salinization or overgrazing. As agricultural areas become even more crowded, arable land is likely to come under increasing pressure. This also sets the livelihoods of millions of subsistence farmers at risk.

Integrated soil health and fertility management (ISHFM) is the key in raising productivity levels while maintaining

Tantangan Bisnis Pemuda Mali

Rural youth empowerment to mitigate international migration?

Understanding the relations between jobs and skilled youth in agriculture and migration

What is the relation between youth employment and education in agriculture and migration? And how should organizations working to improve food security via employment and education programs relate to the political agenda of mitigating (international) migration? These were questions discussed during the Community of Practice Youth in food systems Meet-up on September 11, 2018. Edukans and SNV presented insights from their experiences, followed by a lively debate with organizations active in this field – aiming at creating a better understanding of the eclectic relation between job creation, better skilled and qualified youth and the root causes of migration.

The insights from both Edukans and SNV confirm that it is difficult to pinpoint to a direct effect of skills training and education on migration decisions, as there are so many influencing

MUBARAK INUWA Rolf Schinkel. It is unanimously believed that youth migration, mostly happened in poor nations of the world. This is due to the fact that youth, need to upgrade their life condition from local to more socialised better condition of life, where they would have an affluent life with every social infrastructure. This is not possible without job opportunity-Provision of employment to youth, would led them life upgrading to receive better education in more complex societies, where after graduation they would obtain a white collar job to purchase their life needs.

Kenya’s Agricultural Sector at a Glance

Agriculture in Kenya plays a vital role in contributing to its economy. The sector brings in 65% of total export earnings to the country and provides the livelihood for more than 80% of the Kenyan population (employment, income and food security needs). More remarkably, the sector employs more than 40 per cent of the total population and more than 70 per cent of Kenya’s rural people. Agriculture in Kenya is large and complex, with a myriad of parastatals, non-governmental, private and public sectors.

The sector is also a main drive of the non- agricultural sector. Operations such as tourism, transport, education, construction and other social services are in one way or the other intertwined with agriculture. It is also important to note, that Kenya’s population has increased significantly (growing from 10 million in 1970 to 40 million in 2012) and it is projected that in the next 20 years, that number will double to 83 million.
