Partnership cracks open the macadamia chain for small farmers

The cultivation of macadamia nuts in Malawi has been the preserve of big businesses to date. Small farmers lack the requisite materials, knowledge and a sales channel to start cultivating the popular nut themselves. Thanks to a Dutch-Malawian project, they too are now being given access to this growth market.

The project is providing 3,000 farmers in Malawi with a total of 300,000 small macadamia trees. This is being enabled by an investment on the part of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The seedlings are being grown centrally by Malawian processing firm Sable Farming, which is also taking responsibility for their distribution to the farmers. The impact for the farmers will be considerable, explains the firm’s director, H.S. Pannu. 'Macadamia cultivation will generate an extra, secure income for them. It will supplement income from crops such as maize and tobacco, which are harvested in the spring. Macadamia cultivatio

Voice for Change Partnership: 'Nothing for us without us'

On 29th September 2017, AgriProFocus, IFPRI, SNV, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands in Kenya together with several stakeholders started a journey that will see critical transformation and development in Kenya- the launch of the Voice for Change Partnership project.

It is clear through available statistics that by 2050 the world population would be over 9 billion and the biggest challenge would be food insecurity. The premonition, if we don’t act on the looming food crisis, many people are going to die of hunger. From human point of view and indeed Africa tradition, dying of hunger is not only painful but also shameful. It is imperative then for everyone to commit to work in order to avert the pain and shame of the encroaching calamity.

The urgency of the solutions to this peculiar problem of food insecurity especially in Africa cannot be underrated. From several researches, it is clear that the Africa continent has latent pote

Dutch Development Results - Website!

With this website, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs presents the results that the Netherlands, together with national and international partners, has achieved in the field of development co-operation in 2016.

Have a look at this very informative website, with information on country level, countries and themes: http://www.dutchdevelopmentresults.nl/

Inclusive sustainable development

Investing in inclusive sustainable development pays off. This was also apparent in 2016. The number of people living in extreme poverty has been further reduced to less than 10% of the world’s population. In 2010, this figure was 22% (and in 1990 it was 47%).

Making trade and investment flows sustainable is no easy feat in an unpredictable global economy. Climate change is not only leading to long-term drought but also to major flooding. And for truly equitable development to exist, attention must be paid to the disadvantaged position of women and girls. The Netherlands conti

“Transforming Food Systems for Improved Nutrition”

How can the agricultural sector in African countries help tackling the triple burden of malnutrition?

Summary of lunch meeting 29th June 2017 at The Dutch Ministry Foreign Affairs

African Union (AU) members demand the international community to support them in their ambition of a nutrition revolution. Transitions of African food systems are at a crossroads. If AU countries take the right direction, there is an opportunity to prevent mistakes made in OECD countries, where reducing undernutrition was accompanied by a pendulum swing in the direction of overnutrition and environmental degradation. A food systems approach, including multi-sectoral collaboration such as between the health and the agricultural sector, is a key entry point to address this ‘triple burden’.

Please find HERE the full document of highlights from a lunch meeting entitled ‘Transforming Food Systems for Improved Nutrition’ on 29 June 2017.

Nicole Metz Dear Fostina Mani, thank you for your reaction. As representative of AgriProFocus and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform, I will repond. Maybe we have not been clear enough in the information about the partnerships, apologies. There are many different partnerships on food security and nutrition. The Netherlands' government is involved in several of those, including in those funded through their instrument 'FDOV'. If you are interested, please read the analysis of the PPPLab about all those partnerships. http://www.ppplab.org/ All kinds of companies are involved, as well as other stakeholders. I would be interested in knowing what your company does, so please upload some of your information / leaflets. Possibly we may connect you with relevant other players in our network (depending on what you are looking for). Best regards, Nicole Metz nmetz@agriprofocus.com
