Business arguments for a gender sensitive business strategy

This article presents three examples of companies experiencing the benefits of addressing gender in their business strategy. Companies can have different roles in agricultural value chains: buyer, input supplier, or employer. All types of company can benefit from including women in their businesses, in many differe

‘Gender is still too often a separate paragraph’

This round-table interview is one of the articles in the Gender Magazine 'Making Gender Work: Cultivating Diversity'

How can this be changed?

It is not easy to integrate a gender perspective into a programme. Partners can accuse you of imposing Western values, women are not allowed to participate, colleagues don’t take the issue seriously, and so on. There are, however, many ways to persevere and to enjoy success, according to three experienced gender specialists ‘One way is building a relationship of trust.’

When Julie Newton, senior gender advisor at KIT Royal Tropical Institute explained for the first time to the scientists of the African Chicken Genetics Programme the value of integrating a gender perspective, she experienced some resistance. ‘National scientists initially felt we were imposing Western values of equality, or even feminism. In these cases I remain respectful and I first listen. Then I explain how relatio

How to select value chains

Guidelines for value chain selection: Integrating economic, environmental, social and institutional criteria.

In close collaboration with GIZ and ILO, Fair & Sustainable Advisory Services (FSAS) consultants Jochem Schneemann and Trude Vredeveld developed a publication named Guidelines for Value Chain Selection. The Guidelines provide development practitioners, such as development organizations, NGOs, donors and governments with an easy to use tool to identify those value chains with most potential to achieve their development objectives and targets within a reasonable time frame.

The Guidelines offer a holistic and structured approach to value chain selection. They combine four different dimensions of value chains/sustainable development: economic, environmental, social and institutional. Since the four dimensions are interconnected, overlooking any one of them during value chain selection will affect the next phase of value chain analysis and development. No comp

In 2014 The Hunger Project (THP) Benin commissioned FSAS consultant Jochem Schneemann and national consultant Olivier Akele to analyze the potential of the Moringa leaf powder value chain as part of the ‘Moringa for improved nutrition and income generation project’. The research provides clarity about the market potential, the profitability of Moringa production and processing, and about the way the value chain is organized and can be further developed. We are developing the follow up phase now.

Since 2012 The Hunger Project (THP) Benin promotes the use of Moringa leaves to combat malnutrition, because the leaves are known to contain high levels of protein, iron, vitamins and micro nutrients such as zinc.
