Delphy and AgriProFocus have embarked on a tailor made training program for the A Zambian based Women Organization, Nsabo Yetu to strengthen the horticultural sector in the North-Western Province of Zambia.
The training which is projected to run until May 2019, will address the under performance of the horticultural sector in the area.
According to the project brief, it was noted that poor horticultural practices coupled with limited access to effective soil management technologies and lack of consistency in the production of horticultural produce has limited the farmer’s capacity to penetrate the chain store markets and potentially the export market.

Globally, despite efforts, not only that women are disproportionately represented in science, business and leadership, but also that, currently, women sexual harassment are rampant in many industries in developing and developed countries. Women have low involvement in Science and Research. Women in power and decision making (both political and non-political) are very rare. The African, with special focus to Ethiopia, the situation gets worse. Hence, the status of women shows that there are plenty of gaps, which require systematic and strategic interventions.

This Gender in Climate-Smart Agriculture module provides guidance and a comprehensive menu of practical tools for integrating gender in the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of projects and investments in climate-smart agriculture (CSA). The module emphasizes the importance and ultimate goal of integrating gender in CSA practices, which is to reduce gender inequalities and ensure that men and women can equally benefit from any intervention in the agricultural sector to reduce risks linked to climate change. Climate change has an impact on food and nutrition security and agriculture, and the agriculture sector is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases. It is crucial to recognize that climate change affects men and women differently. (98 pages with many cases).
Gender gaps in agriculture in Africa are holding back progress towards ending hunger and must be urgently addressed, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation's director-general José Graziano da Silva. He said this at a joint event with the African Union (AU) on the margins of the UN General Assembly. “We need to better recognize and harness the fundamental contribution of women to food security and nutrition. For that, we must close persisting gender gaps in agriculture in Africa,” Graziano da Silva said.
The director-general called for better representation of women in governance mechanisms and decision-making processes, as well as adequate and equal access to land, financial resources, social protection programmes, services and opportunities for women in rural areas.

Agriculture is central to the livelihoods of the rural poor and in the attainment of suitable development goals; gender equality further plays a crucial role in the achievement of these goals. However, gender differences arising from the socially constructed relationships between men and women affect the distribution of resources between them and cause many disparities in development. Consequently; gender issues must be addressed because agriculture can be the engine of growth that is necessary to reduce food insecurity and rural poverty. This training course is therefore intended to help participants address gender issues and integrate gender-responsive actions in the design and implementation of agricultural projects and rural development programs.

The East African Community (EAC) Gender Policy has been launched, with a call to member states leaders and stakeholders to use it to deliver gender equity and equality to all East Africans. The policy is aimed at mainstreaming gender in all aspects of the EAC integration process by promoting the different and complementary roles of men and women in all regional activities.
The policy will further strengthen the mainstreaming of gender concerns in the planning and budgetary processes of all sectors in the EAC organs, institutions and partner states.
In August 2012, a meeting of the EAC Council of Ministers directed the secretariat to develop policies on gender equality, youth, children, social protection and community development. SNV's ‘Enhancing Opportunities for Women Enterprises’ (FLOW/EOWE) programme focuses on supporting rural women in entrepreneurship by addressing the systemic barriers that many rural women face when launching their businesses. One of the key challenges for rural women to launch start-up initiatives is access to capital to promote their start-up initiatives and turn their ideas into a viable business. In mid-August 2018, SNV together with the Provincial Women’s Union organised the Women Business Start-up 2018 event in Binh Thuan, a South Central Coast province in Vietnam, where 16 women had the opportunity to present their innovative start-up ideas and to connect to relevant stakeholders to take their start-up to the next level.

One woman's experience with VSLAs and a tale of how Ugandan farmers saved 300 Million UGX in one year
Agriculture is the largest provider of employment to the Ugandan workforce. It accounts for over 70% of the total labour force in Uganda, employing predominantly women (76%) and youth (63%) living in the rural areas (FAO, 2018). Farming however is largely subsistence and the majority of farmers face a variety of challenges; lack of: knowledge and skills, access to credit, information about what to produce and how to produce to earn more money and unpredictable prices, which are often low.
Lending by financial institutions to the farmers is very minimal due to the high risks associated with farming and lack of collateral. This has forced many farmers to borrow from unscrupulous money lenders who lend at exorbitantly high interest rates.

The baseline studies of the EOWE programme show that the success of women in agribusiness is not only determined by the level of access to resources and business assets, but also by gendered-specific behaviour and roles, which influences women’s decision-making power and control around these resources and business assets.
Tackling the inequalities that exist between men and women in many rural agricultural societies therefore also requires a change in the deeply entrenched gender norms that are at the root of these inequalities.
As an entry point to reflect on and transform restrictive gender norms and power relations, the EOWE programme developed a contextualised Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) strategy in order to create more equal income and business opportunities and a socially enabling environment for women entrepreneurship in agricultural value chains.

Social impact investor Oikocredit continues to surpass the sector average for outreach to female microfinance clients, according to indicators published today in Oikocredit's Social and Environmental Performance Report 2017.
In 2017 almost 90% of clients reached by the microfinance organisations in which Oikocredit invests are women. This compares to an average of 70% for the sector as reported in the latest Symbiotics MIV Survey1, which presents sector data for 2016.
Oikocredit also surpassed the sector average for outreach to female microfinance clients in 2014, 2015 and 2016 when comparing year-on-year with the Symbiotics data for the same period2.
The latest report shows how Oikocredit used over € 980 million to finance almost 750 organisations in 2017, reaching 36 million financial inclusion clients and over half a million farmers.
