Heifer launches Tanzania School Milk Program

Since 2008, our Tanzania program has focused on helping dairy farmers increase milk production. And we’ve seen incredible success with demand for milk rising at a rate of 7 percent per year.

Now, we are broadening that focus to create more viable and diverse markets for these farmers. With the help of our farmers, government agencies, and school districts, we’ve created a school milk feeding program to encourage a generation of milk-drinkers and increase the well-being and nutrition of eager students. It will also create and expand a reliable market to deliver milk to kids in need of the vitamins and minerals milk provides.

Milk will be collected from farmers in the East Africa Dairy Development project, then processed into 8-ounce packages.

Packaged milk will then be distributed to school children ages 9 and younger.

Delivery will occur each day of the 200-day school year to 10,000 children in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania.

Test your ears: Heifer International Quiz!

But wait — do cows really moo? And what sound does an alpaca make? Or a goat? How about a pig?

It's time to find out: Can you match each animal to its sound? Even better, a generous donor has pledged to give 50 cents to Heifer International for every game played.

You might think this quiz will be easy, but we bet you'll be stumped, surprised and maybe even learn a thing or two about the life-changing animals that are the basis of our work.

This quiz is a quick and easy way to support our mission: Every game played will trigger a 50 cent donation. Plus it's really fun!

Go ahead, test your barnyard smarts by clicking on this link!

Good luck!

Adapting to climate change: Dutch network members exchange

AgriProFocus Share-a-Slice meeting with network members - 20 April 2017

This informal gathering of AgriProFocus members was hosted by Heifer Netherlands and members exchanged experiences about their interventions to deal with the challenges of climate change in food and agriculture.

Pitches

ScopeInsight’s Maryse Blom started with the statement that ‘professionalism is the key, also for climate smart agriculture’. ScopeInsight has developed several tools to assess the professional quality of agribusinesses (incl SMEs) and trains partners in LMICs to use these effectively. The organization is a business intelligence provider, scoring companies on 8 clearly defined dimensions. As a separate service, they facilitate aligned capacity building that is provided by a group of organisations in the AMEA alliance. This set of services to support capacity building of farmers and SMEs in the agrifood sector is key as a basis to also tackle

Sketch for a research & training facility, starter culture production, and market research

Article Food & Businss Knowledge Platform, by Sijmen Schouten - GCP1 Zambian traditional fermented foods

In 2015, the University of Zambia, together with five partner organizations, started a project on Zambian traditional non-alcoholic fermented foods. Mabisi (based on milk) and Munkoyo (based on cereal) were chosen for the study. These products are formed through the activity of fermenting microbes that convert raw materials into products with higher value. The aims of the study are to formalise current artisanal processing practice based on a best practice of current local house hold level processing and to design starter cultures of defined mixtures of bacteria to optimize and standardize the fermentation process.

Local farmer cooperatives as focal groups as owners of the tradition. Local farmers and their cooperatives and organisations are involved in our project as key stakeholders. T
