Since 2008, our Tanzania program has focused on helping dairy farmers increase milk production. And we’ve seen incredible success with demand for milk rising at a rate of 7 percent per year.
Now, we are broadening that focus to create more viable and diverse markets for these farmers. With the help of our farmers, government agencies, and school districts, we’ve created a school milk feeding program to encourage a generation of milk-drinkers and increase the well-being and nutrition of eager students. It will also create and expand a reliable market to deliver milk to kids in need of the vitamins and minerals milk provides.
Milk will be collected from farmers in the East Africa Dairy Development project, then processed into 8-ounce packages.
Packaged milk will then be distributed to school children ages 9 and younger.
Delivery will occur each day of the 200-day school year to 10,000 children in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania.

In 2015, the University of Zambia, together with five partner organizations, started a project on Zambian traditional non-alcoholic fermented foods. Mabisi (based on milk) and Munkoyo (based on cereal) were chosen for the study. These products are formed through the activity of fermenting microbes that convert raw materials into products with higher value. The aims of the study are to formalise current artisanal processing practice based on a best practice of current local house hold level processing and to design starter cultures of defined mixtures of bacteria to optimize and standardize the fermentation process.

Heifer project participants in Zambia’s Copperbelt province are sleeping much more soundly now that they’re able to turn their dairy cows and hard work into the necessities of a more comfortable life.

Press release on the signing of the Rwanda dairy development project.
Rome, 4 November 2016 – The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Government of Rwanda signed an agreement today that will improve the livelihoods of over 100,000 smallholder farmers and generate opportunities for other actors in the country’s dairy sector.
The agreement was signed in Rome by H. E. Jacques Kabale Nyangezi, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Rwanda to IFAD, and Kanayo F. Nwanze, President of IFAD. The Rwanda Dairy Development project will cover 12 districts and involve an investment of US$65.1 million, which includes a $43.6 million IFAD loan, a $1.1 million IFAD grant, a $4 million grant from Heifer International and contributions from the Government of Rwanda, the private sector and project beneficiaries.
Current annual milk production in Rwanda is valued at approximately $162.
Heifer Project International is one of many non-governmental organization involved in rural development around the world. It works at the grassroots by providing animals and training to organized local groups that request assistance. Eighty-five percent of Uganda’s populations live in rural areas. Seventy-one percent of its land area is used for agricultural purposes and 66 percent of its total population relies on agriculture for its livelihood, indicating the importance of livestock and crops for small-scale farmers.

It's happening Now! Milk Consumption Promotion Campaign! Dairy Stakeholders' Event-2015 organizers are spearheading a campaign to promote the consumption of milk and milk products. The campaign is targeting the back to school shopping period. After engaging dairy processors: JESA Farm Dairy, Sameer/Brookside, Pearl Dairy and Mega Milk, these have agreed to promote and sell subsidized milk products. Update preparations National Dairy Event 2015
On 11th Jun 2015 we held our 1st planning meeting for the National Dairy Event. Present were; AgriProFocus Uganda, Send a Cow Uganda, Heifer International/EADD, ILRI, Bushika Integrated Area Cooperative Enterprise, Reline and Packo Ltd. We had fruitful discussions that led to an improved concept note, budget and constituting an organising committee. Meeting was hosted at Send a Cow Uganda office.
Through their collaboration under the AgriProFocus Uganda Network, Dairy Development Authority (DDA), Send a cow Uganda, Heifer international/EADD , Netherlands Development Organisation (SNV), and Brookside Sameer are organising a Dairy Stakeholder Event 2015. The event is aimed at promoting consumption under the theme “Drink Milk for Health”. The event is scheduled to take place on 16th and 17th September at UMA show grounds.OBJECTIVES:
The overall goal of the event is to promote the consumption of dairy products. The specific objectives include;
1. To sensitize the public on the benefits of consuming milk and other dairy products
2. To share existing strategies for promoting milk consumption
3. To advocate for policies that promote milk consumption
