Magazine Making Gender Work: cultivating diversity

Last Friday at our network event, AgriProFocus together with its members, launched a one-off magazine about gender in the agrifood sector.

This magazine focuses on the practical implementation of the available tools and knowledge. What are the obstacles in implementing gender strategies and how can we overcome these? What are the success stories and what can we learn from them? By sharing the views of experts from all four sides of the Dutch Diamond, we hope to inspire you to start or further develop gender sensitivity in your work.

This magazine, as a representation of our network, would not have been possible without the contribution of our members. Thank you all for sharing your insights, your experiences and your stories!

You can find the online version of the magazine HERE

New study challenges funds and governments to invest in African agrifood SMEs

Today Rabobank Foundation, AgriProFocus, Food & Business Knowledge Platform and ICCO Cooperation publish the study ‘Critical Capital for African Agrifood SMEs’. The study evaluates the access of risk capital by agrifood SMEs (small and medium enterprises). SMEs are key for establishing sustainable food systems, while at the same time face difficulties to access capital.

Offer agrifood SMEs an assortment of services

The study focuses on agrifood SMEs that form the ‘missing middle’: too large for micro-finance and too small for mainstream banks and private equity firms. A major conclusion is that there are very few investment funds that meet the financing needs of agrifood SMEs, that are usually under 250.000 USD and rarely higher than 1M USD. Such smaller investments are tedious and costly for investment funds, even for those set up with the explicit goal to stimulate the development of the agrifood sector.

Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture visits AgriProFocus

On Friday February 9, Marjolijn Sonnema, Director General of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality visited the AgriProFocus office in Utrecht. She was curious to find out more about our network; who are our members, what drives us and how can the ministry and AgriProFocus work more together on agriculture and food security?

We wanted to present the broad variety of members and activities of our network. We invited members in Utrecht and set up a live video connection with Uganda and Benin. Our coordination teams there had invited network members and partners that are involved in the Benin “Uplifting the Fish Value Chain in Benin” program and in the Uganda PAINT program, two strong examples of how AgriProFocus facilitates Dutch, national and international partners to work together on common goals and agendas.

Thanks to the live connection a lively discussion sparked between the guests in Utrecht, Uganda an

Truvalu: a new player in the agrifood sector

 – with ambitions“The world food market can no longer ignore fair chains”

Fair chains are the way of the future in the world food market. Investing in food value chains is not only an obligation – it also offers scope for contributing to sustainable economic development in developing countries, said social entrepreneur Jaap Jan Verboom at the launch of Truvalu, a new part of the global development organization ICCO Cooperation. Truvalu makes use of the opportunities offered by the world food market to enable agrifood and food-processing companies in developing countries to grow and increase their market share.

Unprocessed agricultural commodities, like cacao and coffee, are the main export products for emerging economies. Processing these into marketable products is a profitable activity but is often done in Europe. Verboom: “That’s why local economic development is going nowhere. If we can enable farmers not only to get a fair pric
