Interview of the Month

With Dr. Angeline Nguedjeu

Regional Advisor for Lobby and Advocacy, ICCO Cooperation

In July, ICCO Cooperation had organized a three days training on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for FSRE Fund winners engaging in the agribusiness sector. Dr. Angeline Nguedjeu, Regional Advisor for Lobby and Advocacy for ICCO Cooperation, was leading the training. At the end, when they are asked their comment on the training, all the participants were lacking words to express her talent. She is funny, she does not run out of examples, and she clarifies everything easily. We had the opportunity to have this short interview with the Cameroonian lady. She will tell us the benefits of CSR, the role of government, how CSR can go hand in hand with achieving food security, and more.

(Reports on the training can be found HERE, and please also find reflections and previous experiences of the participants on CSR HERE)

What do you expect from the CSR training?

ICCO COOPERATION LAUNCHED AGRI-BUSINESS INNOVATION CHALLENGE IN UGANDA

ICCO Cooperation, an international Dutch development organisation, has launched its agri-business innovation challenge to kick-start and boost the businesses of agri-entrepreneurs in Uganda.

Speaking during the launch recently, David Kamukama, the ICCO representative, explained that the challenge’s main focus was to improve and boost smallholder farming in Uganda through agri-tools and technology.

“We are looking for innovative and scalable agri-businesses that can substantially improve the profitability of smallholder farmers in Uganda,” said Kamukama.

Kamukama further explained that the different business models need to make use of technically-validated tools or technologies; be in their first three years of existence; operate within the local or regional market; and, put the social purpose of the business at the same level as profit gains.

Up to 10 entrepreneurs will be supported to develop their business concepts

Linking ZOA to active farmers around Kampala

Under the ICCO AS4Y project, ZOA started development of a range of training videos.

These videos will be used at Vocational Training Institutes and youth organizations to provide technical support on enterprise production and create inspiration to venture into agri business.

The videos will be availed in English and translated into West Nile languages. Access will be open to the wider stakeholder community after final acceptance. Enterprises of interest are;

1. Apiculture

2. Tree Nursery Management

3. Horticulture: Tomato

4. Goat Rearing

While most of the videos were shot in West Nile, ZOA is in need to redo the filming of some few shots for each of the above enterprises. They plan to film these shots closer to town.

Dutch breweries investing in Ethiopia

http://www.npo.nl/nieuwsuur/31-01-2015/VPWON_1235675

The Dutch news programme ‘Nieuwsuur’ of Saturday 31st January included an item on Dutch breweries’ investments in Ethiopia. (most text in Dutch, though some English and Amharic)

"The project is exactly what the Dutch government wants: combining trade and aid” says one interviewee.

The programme shows the new Ethiopian breweries of Heineken and Bavaria. Ethiopia is a grow market for beer; the two companies have the ambition to contribute to a higher beer consumption per capita. Different stakeholders are interviewed: representatives of the two companies, a representative of ICCO, a representative of the Dutch Embassy (Mr Hans van de Heuvel). The Embassy expects the investments to contribute to food security, generating income for farmers.

In my opinion, the programme could have been more informative if it had addressed challenging issues such as whether barley production com

Orone Moses was among the farmers that were visited during the Disaster Risk Reduction learning event hosted by COU-TEDDO and organized by Agri-ProFocus Food Security Innovation Community led by ICCO Cooperation. The main objectives of the event were to reflect on last year's ZOA event and to learn from COU-TEDDO on how it facilitates its farmers and farmer groups in reducing risks to natural disasters like rains, droughts, famine, energy and strong winds imageamong others.

Moses and his wife Immaculate were visited at their small-scale farm where they partnered with COU-TEDDO to install the biogas system to generate energy for cooking and lighting their hut. They have used the residuals from biogas as fertilizers to grow vegetables for home consumption and a few for sale, in addition to harvesting highly yielded bananas. In fact, this has enabled them to build a permanent house that they plan to finish in the coming 6 months. The couple has managed to convince other partners like World Vision
