Support services within agribusiness clusters

In 2SCALE, the role and terms of reference of agribusiness advisors moved from being mostly technical advisors for primarily farmers to facilitators and on-the-job coaches of local business actor networks formed as partnerships around a Producers’ Groups: the agribusiness clusters (ABCs). Adapting to climate change: Dutch network members exchange

AgriProFocus Share-a-Slice meeting with network members - 20 April 2017

This informal gathering of AgriProFocus members was hosted by Heifer Netherlands and members exchanged experiences about their interventions to deal with the challenges of climate change in food and agriculture.

Pitches

ScopeInsight’s Maryse Blom started with the statement that ‘professionalism is the key, also for climate smart agriculture’. ScopeInsight has developed several tools to assess the professional quality of agribusinesses (incl SMEs) and trains partners in LMICs to use these effectively. The organization is a business intelligence provider, scoring companies on 8 clearly defined dimensions. As a separate service, they facilitate aligned capacity building that is provided by a group of organisations in the AMEA alliance.

#HEFORSHE: 2SCALE AND AGRIPROFOCUS CELEBRATE MEN WHO EMPOWER WOMEN

Less than 5 percent of women in Mali own land, while more than 30 percent serve as heads of household responsible for providing food, healthcare, and school fees for their children. Because of their social vulnerability, particularly in the Ségou region, 2SCALE prioritizes strengthening women’s economic position in value chains and improving their access to agricultural training, seeds, fertilizers, and land.

Following this objective and in celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8), 2SCALE and the AgriProFocus network in Mali honored four men who demonstrate a proactive commitment to reduce gender-related inequalities in a vegetable partnership the project supports in Ségou. The recipients included:

• Mahamadou Nantoumé, CEO of Guina Agricole, for strengthening women’s access to quality agricultural inputs and phytosanitary services on preferential terms.

• Bakary Coulibaly, community leader, for promoting ge

PizzaProFocus! Informal network meeting on inclusive business

On Thursday evening 2nd February, the Dutch network of AgriProFocus gathered for an informal network meeting with pizzas: PizzaProFocus. The meeting took place at BoP Innovation Center, one of the organizations which had made the proposal to the network to start such informal gatherings to enable people in the network to meet, discuss, get new ideas, and establish new connections.

This time, the theme was Inclusive Business. 3 pitches were done by CBI’s Eva Smulders; ICRA’s Bertil Videt; and BoPInc’s Niek van Dijk. Other participants responded, which gave room for further open questions and exchanges. Some of the key areas of interest from that discussion that I recall:

CBI has developed a new tool, with support of Schuttelaar & Partners, to support SMEs in low- and middle-income countries with an interest to export to Europe, in developing more ‘responsible business’ practices. After the use of this tool, thes
