Avocado growing; the green gold for farmers

The Hass avocado variety is the most popular East Africa avocado for export because it enjoys a good market in Europe as compared to the other varieties. Hass is originally from Guatemala and one of its most prominent features is that it turns dark purple when ripe.

The fruit grants the following benefits which generally apply across the family of avocados:

They are high in protein and mineral content, compared to animal protein.

Avocados are an essential source of good cholesterol.

They are used in cosmetics, for example, in the manufacture of facial and hair oil.

Economically, they are a good source of income for farmers besides earning foreign currency for the country especially Hass avocados.

Avocado growing is largely a permanent investment and, therefore, there is need for careful planning before venturing into it.

Ecological requirements

Hass avocado does well in altitudes between 1,000m to 2,000m. The fruit is generally bigger in cool areas

Youth skilled in agricultural value chains at farm camp:

Besides the inspiration from the hands-on experience during the week-long camp, it exposed students to careers in agriculture, agribusiness, entrepreneurship, innovations and leadership skills through agricultural activities.

More than 600 students drawn from different colleges and high schools gathered at Gayaza High School on the farm. Some were seen watering vegetables, others checking on nursery beds, while the rest were on fodder farm attending to dairy animals.

Every year there is a farm camp organised for secondary school children across the country at Gayaza High School in a bid to impart innovative agriculture skills in the children. This year’s camp attracted students from schools such as St Peter’s College Tororo, Marry Hill, Nyakasura, Bombo Army secondary school and St Catherine's secondary from northern Uganda; among others.

Under the theme “Exploring the Farming value chains” students exploited the opportunities

Mugisha Richard Mugisha Richard Simon is such a great youth entrepreneur. We were inspired by his story and rich experience of 16 years in bee keeping. This was during last year's (2017) AgriProFocous Youth Caravan at his farm in Bushenyi.  He started his bee business with nothing but 2000 shillings and now he is one of the few rich youth in Mbarara. He actually says, interest + determination + hardwork =success. We are proud of you Simon!

UNFFE advocates for value addition as the National Agricultural show draws closer:

This year’s agricultural show will be the 26th and it is slated to take place from 13th to 22nd July under the theme; “Fostering Agricultural Value Chains, Innovation for Farmer led food Security, Household Income and Job Creation." The Uganda National Farmers’ Federation (UNFFE) will hold the annual National Agricultural show at the Source of the Nile Jinja show grounds.

The challenge with Uganda’s agriculture is competitiveness. Uganda’s agriculture does not have a competitive advantage over others due to production of less quantity to meet the outside demand and leave enough for domestic consumption and production of ‘not good enough’ quality to compete with in the globalised agricultural value chains.

This years’ show will therefore focus more on irrigation technologies, value addition, and livestock. The theme brings out the opportunity that aims at preparing and organising the small ho

USAID INNOVATIONS in FEED the FUTURE

1000000$

Due date : 12 October, 2018

Presentation of the donor

The U.S. Government, in partnership with other governments, civil society, multilateral development institutions, research institutions, universities, and the private sector, will build on experience to date through Feed the Future to address these challenges, take advantage of opportunities, and advance food security and improved nutrition by focusing efforts around three interrelated and interdependent objectives:

Inclusive and sustainable agricultural-led economic growth, as growth in the agriculture sector has been shown in some areas to be more effective than growth in other sectors at helping men and women lift themselves out of extreme poverty and hunger. It does this by increasing availability of food, generating income from production, creating employment and entrepreneurship opportunities throughout value chains, and spurring growth in rural and urban economies.

Strengthened resilience among

Gates, Mastercard launch new platform for smallholder farmers

By Andrew Green

Digital technology has long been touted as the key to helping smallholder farmers around the world overcome barriers that have kept them trapped in poverty, though initial innovations did not always deliver on this promise. Now developers of digital tools for agriculture are trying to refine their offerings, focusing on products that farmers want to use and that align with their priorities. And at the top of that list is getting fair prices for their products.

“Farmers want direct access to markets,” said Daniel Monehin, MasterCard’s division president for sub-Saharan Africa. Through MasterCard Labs for Financial Inclusion — its r
