In case you missed it, the Business Drinks event was great

AgriProFocus, in partnership with Ethiopia Netherlands Trade for Agricultural Growth (ENTAG), organized the second Business Drinks of the year on 30th of March 2017 at Black Rose Lounge, Addis Ababa. The Business Drinks have been organized since 2015 for the purpose of bringing together the agribusiness and agricultural development community for an informal interaction and networking.

On this last Thursday’s event 55 members of AgriProFocus as well as people from partner organizations were present. As always it was interesting to see new faces and to hear pitches about new ideas and innovations. We tried to summarize the pitches in the following manner, so that they could reach those who missed the event.

Belaineh Mekonnen is a researcher and founder of MOMALLOT, which is a private soil fertility research organization in Ethiopia. His organization is “working on the impact of the new way of home gardening through self-water

PizzaProFocus! Informal network meeting on inclusive business

On Thursday evening 2nd February, the Dutch network of AgriProFocus gathered for an informal network meeting with pizzas: PizzaProFocus. The meeting took place at BoP Innovation Center, one of the organizations which had made the proposal to the network to start such informal gatherings to enable people in the network to meet, discuss, get new ideas, and establish new connections.

This time, the theme was Inclusive Business. 3 pitches were done by CBI’s Eva Smulders; ICRA’s Bertil Videt; and BoPInc’s Niek van Dijk. Other participants responded, which gave room for further open questions and exchanges. Some of the key areas of interest from that discussion that I recall:

CBI has developed a new tool, with support of Schuttelaar & Partners, to support SMEs in low- and middle-income countries with an interest to export to Europe, in developing more ‘responsible business’ practices. After the use of this tool, thes

The First 2017 Business Drinks: How It Went

Last week, 26 January, we had our first Business Drinks of the year 2017. As usual, it has remarkably served members and partners to meet new people, chat about possible business opportunities, and introduce new agribusinesses.

More than 70 people attended the event, and we had the chance to listen interesting one-minute pitches.

Awot Berhane is a student at Addis Ababa University, and made a pitch about Green Innovation Hub, which he is a member. He told us that GIH is a student led initiative which channels youth ideas towards tackling climate change and promotes sustainable development.

Wendewesen Kebede is another young pitcher on our Business Drinks. He represents a group of Dairy Advisors who are well experienced on the dairy sector and have received practical trainings from well-known experts arranged by DairyBISS program and Fair and Sustainable Ethiopia. Wendewesen explained on his pitch that the Advisors group provides various dairy develo

AgriProFocus is organising 3 Regional Business Platforms (formerly known as the Agribusiness Finance Fairs) this year. During our experiences with the finance fairs, we found that one of the main issues in the Agriculture sector is the lack of collaboration between value chain actors (market, inputs, finance, etc). Therefore, our main goal is to develop business linkages and partnerships through these platforms.
