Why is it so difficult for African farmers to have access to loans?

Check the study on Finance for Smallholders and the workshops held in different country networks

together with NpM Platform for Inclusive Finance and the Food & Business Knowledge Platform

Josien Sluijs, director of NpM, Platform for Inclusive Finance:

“Why is it so difficult for African farmers to have access to loans? If farmers are organised in formal groups, it is much easier for a financial institution to give a loan. The study ‘Finance for Smallholders’, carried out together with AgriProFocus and funded by the Food & Business Knowledge Platform gives insights. The study provides 14 models in Ethiopia, Mali, Rwanda and Uganda, in which NpM or AgriProFocus have managed to successfully finance farmers. AgriProFocus networks in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Benin and Mali, in cooperation with NpM, organised expert meetings to discuss the outcomes of the research. The meetings included a broad delegation of farming organiz

I can imagine MUWANGUZI SAMUEL When I read the overall conclusion of the participants of the workshops I see there is an urgent need for appropriate, flexible and timely financial services tailored to the production cycle of small farmers and that government support is needed through a regulatory framework and stimulation of innovation and finally that donors and investors are to take a facilitating role, also supporting innovation, partnership and high risk investments. Do you agree or do you ahve other suggestions?

Geodata and ICT Solutions for Inclusive Finance & Food Security

An article by Food & Business Knowledge Platform

Innovative developments – An overview

On Thursday February 16, NpM Platform for Inclusive Finance, Rabobank Foundation and the Netherlands Space Office (NSO) organized the conference “Geodata for Inclusive Finance and Food”. The conference aimed to show, share and discuss the latest technological applications based on satellite data in relation to inclusive finance and food security.

Recent developments in technological applications such as satellites provide good sources of information to increase outreach of financial services especially to rural areas and for smallholder farmers. Geo-data and information and communication technologies (ICTs) such as geographic information systems, drones, and cloud computing are now being used to boost smallholder’s production and their income.

Geodata for Inclusive Finance and Food: let's connect!

On 16 February 2017, NpM Platform for Inclusive Finance, the Netherlands Space Office and Rabobank Foundation organised a conference on Geodata for Inclusive Finance and Food in The Netherlands. One of the important outcomes was that different stakeholders should be better connected.

Recent developments in technological applications based on satellite data provide useful information to increase outreach of financial services to rural areas and for smallholder farmers. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs committed EUR 60 million for the development of applications based on geodata for the purpose of agriculture.

The Geodata for Agriculture and Water programme (G4AW) is implemented by the Netherlands Space Office (NSO). Early evidence suggests that these applications offer great promise to produce a higher and more stable crop supply of increased quality. By this, the risk profile of smallholder farmers reduces which is an

Bridging the gap between banks and farmers

Why is it so difficult for African farmers to have access to loans? The study ‘Finance for Smallholders’ carried out by NpM, Platform for Inclusive Finance, together with AgriProFocus and funded by the Food & Business Knowledge Platform gives insights. The study provides 15 cases of how Dutch investors have successfully realised access to financial services for smallholder farmers.

Lesson 1: Organised farmers have better financing opportunities

Lesson 2: Learning to mitigate risks can be done

Lesson 3: Geodata can increase financial inclusion and food security

Lesson 4: We need to work towards green inclusive finance

More on these lessons learned and the full article can be read here. This article appeared in NABC Magazine edition 2017.

On 16th February 2017 NpM organises a conference on the subject ‘Geodata for inclusive finance and food.’
