Newsletter Food & Business Knowledge Platform (December 2018)

In the December Newsletter, the Food & Business Knowledge Platform (F&BKP) indicates that Food and Nutrition Security in conflict sensitive areas is nowadays high on the policy agenda and a priority theme of the Platform. In the newsletter a report is presented about the recent Food _ Stability mission to the Horn of Africa, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and FAO, joined by the F&BKP.

Furthermore the Platform shares an inventory by Nuffic on Dutch-African partnerships in support of SHAEA; an update on the food systems approach and insights of the 2018 Global Nutrition Report.

The rewarded projects under the LEAP-Agri and the Seed Systems Development call are also presented; and the findings of several Global Challenges Programme (GCP) projects and an interview with a team member of the research consortium of the successful GCP aquaponics project.

Delphy, AgriProFocus and Barrick Lumwana Mines Kick off a Tailor Made Training program for Zambian Women Organization -Nsabo Yetu

Delphy and AgriProFocus have embarked on a tailor made training program for the A Zambian based Women Organization, Nsabo Yetu to strengthen the horticultural sector in the North-Western Province of Zambia.

The training which is projected to run until May 2019, will address the under performance of the horticultural sector in the area.

According to the project brief, it was noted that poor horticultural practices coupled with limited access to effective soil management technologies and lack of consistency in the production of horticultural produce has limited the farmer’s capacity to penetrate the chain store markets and potentially the export market.

Program dari NUFFIC NICHE – Innocap untuk penguatan SMK Pertanian di Indonesia telah memasuki tahun kedua pelaksanaan. Program ini terbagi dalam tiga sektor dengan masing-masing SMK target yaitu: peternakan ruminansia, peternakan unggas, dan hortikultura. AgriProFocus bersama Program Diploma IPB memfasilitasi program Innocap di sektor ruminansia. First regional Bizconnect Workshop at State Agriculture Institute (Tharyarwaddy)

AgriProFocus Myanmar facilitated the first Regional Bizconnect workshop on 6 July 2018 at Tharyarwaddy State Agriculture Institute. This event is in cooperation with the Nuffic Niche project by Aeres Group and MDF Asia Myanmar aiming at strengthening Agricultural Vocational Education In Myanmar. The objective is to improve linkages and exchange between SAI and private sector, to improve the SAI’s understanding of the skills and capacities required by the agribusiness companies and to help the students to learn about opportunities and build their network in the agricultural sector.

Strengthening of Vocational Education and Training for Food Security

From 5th to 4th December, a delegation from the Myanmar State Agricultural Institutes (SAIs) visited the Netherlands - as part of the 4-year NICHE project to upgrade agricultural education. 17 members of the so-called Education Support Team had an opportunity to visit agricultural schools, farms and other projects. For many SAI teachers and managers it was the first time they traveled abroad Aye Aye Nyein, senior consultant at MDF Asia Myanmar, accompanied the team. She says "We had studied the TVET education system of Netherlands.Water management ,Wind mills and Dike construction, Delta project to have knowledge on water management and the important of Dikes and Dam for Netherlands. Myanmar youth in agriculture

Last week the first part of the tailor-made training on ‘Partnerships for Youth and Gender Sensitive Food Security, and Food Safety’ took place in Bogolay and Ngwe Saung (Ayerwaddy Region, Myanmar). The training, supported by Nuffic and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was commissioned by Radanar Ayar Development Association (RDA) in collaboration with Wageningen UR – Centre for Development Innovation, and ICCO Cooperation.

ICCO has been cooperating with RDA for over one year now. ICCO/Kerk in Actie supports its work in and around Paungde township (Bago region), where RDA works on capacity building and market linkages for 1,200 smallholder farmers producing blackgram and other crops. As part of ICCO’s Civic Engagement Alliance for lobby & advocacy, RDA advocates for better access to good quality pulses and rice seeds for smallholders. RDA is also collaborating in a number of other partnerships, such as the Livelihoods and Food Security Trust Fund

A new network and fresh perspectives on Nuffic Alumni food security event Yangon

On March 31 and April 1, MDF Myanmar, Holland Alumni Association Myanmar (HAAM), Golden Plain and AgriProFocus Myanmar organized a Nuffic Alumni event about food security in Yangon.

All Myanmar professionals that studied in the Netherlands or received training from a Dutch institution were invited to network and learn about hot topics related to food security. Furthermore, Dutch and Myanmar companies, NGO’s, farmers organizations and even members of parliament active in the food security sector attended the two day event.

On the first day, Ohnmar Khaing, Myanmar Program Manager at the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), introduced the food security framework and current debates. Participants then were invited to share their own ideas about lessons learned and opportunities in shaping food security in Myanmar in a world cafe discussion.
