Ban on Uganda Poultry Could Be Lifted in the Next One Week

Kenya may lift the import ban imposed on Uganda chicken and eggs in the next one week, after experts from the two countries met to assess the measures taken against an epidemic of bird flu.

This will, however, depend on the final tests carried out by a group of experts drawn from the two countries. They will conclude the exercise in the next one week.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett said the two teams are doing a risk assessment of the Avian flu outbreak in Uganda to determine if it has been contained.

Mr Bett did not confirm when the ban would be lifted, but officials told the Sunday Nation that it could be as early as this week.

But Uganda has assured Kenya that it has contained the outbreak, adding that most farms that export eggs to Kenya are located more than 10km from the quarantined area. According to Mr Bett, the team will tab

Uganda’s poultry products safe, says agriculture minister

The government has asked Ugandans and neighboring countries dealing in poultry products, especially domestic birds, not to worry about bird flu saying it was under control.

According to Vincent Ssempijja, the minister for agriculture, the government is currently carrying out continuous veterinary inspections and technical backstopping to commercial farms, to ensure biosecurity measures are strictly adhered to.

“ Fortunately, these farms are located far away from the 10km quarantine radius range, and can produce safe poultry and poultry products for local and export markets,” Ssempijja said.

The minister made the remarks, while addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Center in Kampala, on the steps Government is undertaking to control the avian influenza.

He noted that the disease had been confirmed in seven wild migratory birds, five domestic ducks and one chicken.

According to Ssempijja, several other samples from suspect cases are being

A new Agrodok is available now: Beef production

The main aim of this Agrodok is to provide information on how to increase beef production in extensive and low-input systems, utilising existing conditions, but in a different way. This is a different form of intensification of production and requires a different look at the system, and probably a little more labour and specific inputs.

You can order this Agrodok at the Agromisa website

Tap into animal feeds business

Article by Paul Njuguna

There were three masons at a construction site. When asked, the first man said he was laying bricks. The second man said he was building a wall and quite interesting, the third man said he was busy building a cathedral. Without doubt, the third mason would be a visionary.

A snapshot of the agricultural sector, according to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, reveals Uganda’s annual production of maize is 2.4 million metric tonnes. The problem is, this production is the combined effort of smallholder farmers and 90 per cent of it is set aside for local consumption and export.

The meagre 10 per cent balance is utilised for animal feeds. Most of the exported raw maize is destined to animal feeds companies based at the importer countries. Then, why not export animal feeds? Value addition on maize would rake in tonnes of money in export earnings from animal feeds and other by-products such as cooking oil. But how can this be turned around?

Dear stakeholders,

Happy New Year!

It is that time of the year that we strategically define activities we want to accomplish in the year. As the AgriProFocus mandate dictates of bringing stakeholders together to be able to co-create and innovate, we hope to do the same for the livestock sector through the Nyama platform.

You were part of the results in 2015 and consequently Nyama platform was able to achieve the following;

• Carried out a successful campaign that lobbied and influenced Parliament to allocate 5bn shillings to the National Budget 2015/2016 for the purchase of vaccinations to control Foot and Mouth Disease

• Completed the beef sector map

• Mobilized 10 active organisations that now form the Nyama platform.

Based on these achievements, we wish to invite you to the planning of Nyama platform activities for 2016. The meeting will take place on Wednesday 27th Jan at AgriProFocus/SNV offices 10am- 12pm.
