Workshop Minimizing Postharvest Loss for Nutrition

According to FAO estimates about 1/3 of all food that is produced worldwide is lost or wasted between production and consumption. The impacts are social, economic and environmental as this wastage exacerbates hunger and under - and malnourishment of about 800 million people, leads to an estimated $940 billion in economic losses per year and has a significant impact on the use of water, cropland and greenhouse gas emissions (FAO, 2011). Turning this around we can also state that reducing food loss and waste offers opportunities for positive social, economic and environmental impact.

I-PLAN goes Vietnam

Last week I was in Vietnam, where I also participated in the Regional Food Security Conference ‘Let’s get to work. Building a food secure future’. In her key-note address vice-Minister Marjolijn Sonnema rightfully added the word ‘together’ to the title: building a food secure future together. 

I had the pleasure to present a good example of working together: a project our network is developing together with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), the PostHarvest Network (PHN) and BoP Innovation Center. This project aims to establish an Indonesian Postharvest Loss Alliance for Improved Nutrition (I-PLAN).
