The Story of Postharvest Loss

Check out this video by GAIN to see the costs we are endured because of postharvest loss and waste in agriculture commodities. The damage are ranging from lost in income revenue, green house gasses, to malnutrition which is the most devastating impact caused by postharvest loss.

GAIN have been working  to eliminate food loss between the farm and the market through Postharvest Loss Alliance for Nutrition (PLAN). We are happy to work with the alliance by brought our network for Indonesia PLAN (I-PLAN)'s initial scoping last year.

Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture visits AgriProFocus

On Friday February 9, Marjolijn Sonnema, Director General of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality visited the AgriProFocus office in Utrecht. She was curious to find out more about our network; who are our members, what drives us and how can the ministry and AgriProFocus work more together on agriculture and food security?

We wanted to present the broad variety of members and activities of our network. We invited members in Utrecht and set up a live video connection with Uganda and Benin. Our coordination teams there had invited network members and partners that are involved in the Benin “Uplifting the Fish Value Chain in Benin” program and in the Uganda PAINT program, two strong examples of how AgriProFocus facilitates Dutch, national and international partners to work together on common goals and agendas.

Thanks to the live connection a lively discussion sparked between the guests in Utrecht, Uganda an

Workshop Minimizing Postharvest Loss for Nutrition

According to FAO estimates about 1/3 of all food that is produced worldwide is lost or wasted between production and consumption. The impacts are social, economic and environmental as this wastage exacerbates hunger and under - and malnourishment of about 800 million people, leads to an estimated $940 billion in economic losses per year and has a significant impact on the use of water, cropland and greenhouse gas emissions (FAO, 2011). Turning this around we can also state that reducing food loss and waste offers opportunities for positive social, economic and environmental impact.

GAIN has developed the Postharvest Loss Alliance for Nutrition (PLAN) in order to decrease Post Harvest Losses and Waste (PHL/W) globally by “addressing the lack of knowledge, technology and access to finance as well as the poor coordination along key food supply chains”, with a particular focus on those value chains that provide or have the potential to pro

I-PLAN goes Vietnam

Last week I was in Vietnam, where I also participated in the Regional Food Security Conference ‘Let’s get to work. Building a food secure future’. In her key-note address vice-Minister Marjolijn Sonnema rightfully added the word ‘together’ to the title: building a food secure future together.

I had the pleasure to present a good example of working together: a project our network is developing together with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), the PostHarvest Network (PHN) and BoP Innovation Center. This project aims to establish an Indonesian Postharvest Loss Alliance for Improved Nutrition (I-PLAN).

Food losses

In the developing world most food losses take place before consumption and most remarkably, post farm gate between production and consumption. While loss is most often translated to tonnage of primarily staple foods wasted, postharvest loss and waste most dramatically impacts the perishable nutritious foods, which when lost translate t
