Event posted by in AgriProFocus Rwanda
  11 September 2018, 08:30-16:00
  Lemigo Hotel, Kigali

Dear all,

Warm greetings from Wageningen.
It is my pleasure to bring to your attention the ongoing preparations for a workshop to set up a stakeholder platform for soil fertility in Rwanda.
The workshop will take place on Tuesday, September 11th, 2018 at Lemigo Hotel.
I am sharing this update on behalf of SoilCares (now part of AgroCares), a leading Dutch AgriTech company based in Wageningen (Visit the company website for more information).

SoilCares has developed a technology to scan soils and immediately provide nutrients content and fertilizer recommendations based on the crop a farmer plans to grow on a particular season. I have attached the invitation t

“The Gold Standard: Exploring the added value of the Dutch knowledge platforms”

Article by Food & Business Knowledge Platform

The Dutch Knowledge Platforms are said to ‘have gold in their hands’. A recently launched learning review provides insight into the achievements and added value of the five Knowledge Platforms since their kick-off three years ago.

While the Knowledge Platforms are diverse in their organization and strategy, the reviewers identify common “gems”. These include the multi-stakeholder approach that lies at the core of their institutional strategy. The Platforms do not operate in a vacuum, they are positioned in a context of diverse actors (ministries, NGOs, research institutes, consultancies, businesses, etc.). This shows that their approach is not installed to fulfil only the needs of the Dutch government, but a meaningful way to take stock of multiple perspectives in order to achieve a greater good. Other achievements mentioned in the learning review are the c

Research Study on Dairy Lobby Issues in Zambia

The dairy industry is a source of livelihood for all year round income to small scale farmers as well as emergent and large scale farmers. The Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) and Dairy Association of Zambia (DAZ) received complaints from dairy farmers and processors alike from most parts of the country that the dairy market had suddenly slowed down and processors were finding it difficult to sell their dairy products because demand for local dairy products had slumped with some processors experiencing sales that were half to their usual trends.

DAZ members brought these issues to the foreground during the Regional Dairy Debate Platform held in March in  Monze hosted by DAZ , SNV and AgriProFocus. The main issues highlighted were:

High cost of production – there is need to come up with ways of how to bring down the cost of production per litre of milk and improve negotiation skills for milk prices between farmers and processors.

Exciting!! AgriProFocus Rwanda has empowered its members and other agriculture actors on use of the online platform as way of: marketing, sharing opportunities, communicating to other members as well as getting to know what others have done so far in Agriculture development and other cross-cutting issues.

This is a very important path that stimulates Rwandan actors to actively engage collectively in integrated development pathways as well as an opportunity for entrepreneurs to attract potential customers.

Big up APF Rwanda.

John Ndikuwera Was soo inspiring. Thanks Didier and Anatole for making it happen!

MilkIT promotes milk production in Tanzania and India

Via PAEPARD mailing list I got this paper:  Innovation platforms to improve smallholder dairying at scale: Experiences from the MilkIT project in India and Tanzania. by Duncan, A.J., Teufel, N., Ravichandran, T., Hendrickx, S. and Ballantyne, P.G.

In this 21 page paper the authors reflect on the potential role of innovation platforms as spaces to identify and spread useful innovations associated with dairy production and feeding.

They draw examples from MilkIT, a project to promote milk production in India and Tanzania. They first introduce the idea of innovation platforms and show how they can be used to define the key issues quickly. They highlight the various changes in local practices that innovation platforms can stimulate. They then consider how local innovations can move beyond innovation platforms, and classify a series of mechanisms by which this can happen. They outline strategies to ensure that innovation platforms
