Ntanda takes Ugandan coffee to world market:

When Allan Ntanda set out to start Wine Garage, it seemed a journey into an unknown world. At the time, many people, including his friends, considered wine as a drink for the affluent.

If one had to enjoy a frothy drink, beer was the first choice. His motivation to go into wine business was partly experiential.

Starting

He had worked as a marketer at ‘The Seller’, a wine company run by Geoffrey Mulwana. There, he had cultivated connections within the network of wine suppliers in foreign markets.

Uganda Tea stakeholders' attend learning exchange visit:

Tea is Uganda’s third most important agricultural export earner after coffee and fish. It is one of the commodities selected for the government strategic intervention programme for National Development aiming at promoting production, processing, marketing and export of strategic commodities in the agricultural sector. Tea has contributed approximately 3.6% of Uganda’s export earnings over the last five years and is recognized to be with higher potentials to contribute more to national income, employment and environment conservation.

Despite the good performance and its socio-economic importance, the tea sub-sector is replete with many challenges along the entire value chain. Key among the many include the lack of a comprehensive national tea policy, low research funding, poor quality of planting materials, inferior clones, low quality of tea green leaf hence poor quality of processed tea, low operational capacities of some

Interview with Alban Singirankabo

Alban Singirankabo was offered a SEAD PhD scholarship at TU Delft, after a thorough selection process. As a lecturer at UR/CST-CGIS, with a Master from Twente ITC in Land Administration 2009-2011, Alban has already some experience from the Netherlands. He also knows Nuffic quite well since he was coordinator of a NICHE project implemented by ITC in Rwanda.

In particular, his research will assess the changes in agricultural productivity and ascertain their links with land tenure security and food security. Rwanda has been very successful in only 7 years to register all plots of land. Alban wants to find the reasons behind this success. His research will focus on plots and look at historical developments, linking plots to owners. To do this, the study will examine, archives, literature on land tenure and

Developing Nutrition-Sensitive Value Chains In Indonesia

In Indonesia’s eastern Maluku and North Maluku provinces, malnutrition levels are high. Nutrition challenges include monotonous diets with inadequate levels of energy, micro-nutrients and protein. Studies commissioned by The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) suggest that strengthened value chains for foods such as bananas, cassava, maize, spinach, sweet potatoes and fish could make business sense for smallholders and lay the foundations for a strong local food system that sustainably delivers nutritious foods for healthy diets.
