INTRODUCTION

Given the escalating population growth, intensified cropping, widespread land degradation and shrinking agricultural land, sustaining agricultural production through improved soil management is critical to the issue of food security and poverty alleviation in developing countries.

Limited availability of additional land for crop production along with declining yield growth for major food crops have heightened concerns about agriculture's ability to feed the world population. Much currently cultivated land is being lost through soil erosion, nutrient depletion, desertification, deforestation, and salinization or overgrazing. As agricultural areas become even more crowded, arable land is likely to come under increasing pressure. This also sets the livelihoods of millions of subsistence farmers at risk.

Integrated soil health and fertility management (ISHFM) is the key in raising productivity levels while maintaining

Invitation to a workshop to launch a Soil Platform in RWANDA

Event posted by in AgriProFocus Rwanda
  11 September 2018, 08:30-16:00
  Lemigo Hotel, Kigali

Dear all,

Warm greetings from Wageningen.
It is my pleasure to bring to your attention the ongoing preparations for a workshop to set up a stakeholder platform for soil fertility in Rwanda.
The workshop will take place on Tuesday, September 11th, 2018 at Lemigo Hotel.
I am sharing this update on behalf of SoilCares (now part of AgroCares), a leading Dutch AgriTech company based in Wageningen (Visit the company website for more information).

SoilCares has developed a technology to scan soils and immediately provide nutrients content and fertilizer recommendations based on the crop a farmer plans to grow on a particular season. Rwanda was one of the first countries to adopt this technology through partners such as ENAS and HollandGreenTech.

Myself being a Rwandan, I believe this technology could have an enormous impact on how fertilizer recommendation and soil fertility is conducted in our country, with positive impact on both financial and environmental outcomes.
I have attached the invitation t

Evaluator concludes: SNV’s youth employment approach works.

Youth unemployment in many parts of Africa is soaring, and especially out of school youth in rural areas are a vulnerable group. SNV’s Opportunities for Youth Employment (OYE) project realized employment for almost 16,000 young people, using a so called push-match-pull approach. Sixteen thousand young people, and every one of them stands for a person who started up their life and gained purpose. A final report by an independent evaluator has now confirmed that push-, match pull works. But, what is it? And why does it work?

Rwanda and Netherlands moving from aid based relationship to commercial ties – envoy

Last year, a huge investment of tea by Uniliver, a British-Dutch multinational was launched and is constructing a factory in the southern part of Rwanda but for the Rwandan farmer to get their tea to the factory, they need a good road. So we are involved with World Bank and USAID in constructing good roads to help farmers get acess to the factory which in the long run is also good for the quality of the tea.

What have been your efforts in diversifying the mutual business interests and commercial exchanges for the citizens of the two nations?

Slowly we are getting it with the investment of Uniliver, with the tea investment, and last year there was also the launch of DSM’s Africa Improved Foods, a Dutch multinational at the Special economic zone which has been doing investment in nutritional foods. We are also very happy that there is a company in The Netherlands that now has a deal with a company in Rwa

Outreach on Dairy Farm Record Keeping

SEAD organised an outreach activity, from 5-8 February, on Dairy Farm Record Keeping in the districts of Musanze and Gicumbi. The outreach was attended by large groups of dairy farmers and cooperatives and facilitated by Mark Bos, the dairy value chain expert of consortium partner Q-Point, in collaboration with trainers from Musanze Polytechnic, UR/CAVM and extension service providers from RAB. The training to farmers was organised at the training centre of IMBARAGA Farmers’ Federation in Musanze and at the AIKIB Training Centre in Gicumbi.

The training on farm record keeping was enthusiastically received by farmers, which confirmed the need for providing this kind of training, to improve their understanding of record keeping at farm level.

In Musanze District, a group of 20 Dairy Cooperative members from different sectors were trained on the significance of farm record keeping, emphasising the benefits of record keeping for improved decision making a
