There is a broad consensus that agroecology can be instrumental in achieving a wide range of policy, environmental and food security targets, from sustainability related goals to the reduction of rural poverty.
Building on the 1st International Symposium on Agroecology for Food Security and Nutrition, held in Rome in 2014, and the subsequent regional seminars organized in 2015 and 2016, FAO will host the 2nd International Symposium on Agroecology: Scaling Up agroecology to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in April 2018.
This second symposium aim at moving agroecology from dialogue to activities at the regional and country level by providing an opportunity for sharing ideas and experiences, while discussing policies and actions that can support agroecology in achieving the SDGs and accompany the decade of Family Farming.
The Symposium will take a multi-stakeholder, multi-sectorial and multi-disciplinary approach. About 400 participants are expected to attend, from policy-mak

See interesting blog, link: http://www.tradeforum.org/news/How-the-European-Union-joins-trade-dynamism-with-sustainable-development/
Extract: The European Union (EU) is at the vanguard of marrying the values of sustainable development with the economic engine of trade. Through the incorporation of comprehensive commitments on environmental and labour provisions in all its bilateral trade agreements the EU aims to build free and fair trading relationships. This is a reflection of EU determination to strengthen and uphold the international community’s journey that began with the Millennium Development Goals and the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20) and has culminated with the United Nations 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The vision of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development calls on all countries and stakeholders to work together to end hunger and prevent all forms of malnutrition by 2030. This ambition can only be fulfilled if agriculture and food systems become sustainable, so that food supplies are stable and all people have access to adequate nutrition and health. The start of the 2030 Agenda coincided with the launch of the United Nations Decade of Action on Nutrition (2016–2025), adding impetus to these commitments by providing a time-bound, cohesive framework for action.
This year’s edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World marks the beginning of a new era in monitoring the progress made towards achieving a world without hunger and malnutrition, within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, the report will monitor progress towards

Given the increasingly clear link between financial inclusion and development, governments should continue to push for greater access to and use of financial services.
On 25 September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, along with a new set of development goals that are collectively called the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Agenda is a culmination of many years of negotiation and was endorsed by all 193 member nations of the General Assembly, both developed and developing—and applies to all countries. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon noted that “the new agenda is a promise by leaders to all people everywhere. It is an agenda for people, to end poverty in all of its forms—an agenda for the planet, our common ho

The world of 2015 has shown us that interconnectedness is the norm. More than ever, we depend on each other for our safety, economic development and food security, for example. The Global Goals For Sustainable Development are a timely and urgent backdrop to take up many of the present challenges together. In the light of its mission to promote farmer entrepreneurship, AgriProFocus has a solid basis to contribute to: Goal 2: Zero Hunger; Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production; Goal 13: Climate Action; Goal 15: Life on land.
Policy pillars Dutch government
The AgriProFocus network underscores the key policy pillars for food security of the Dutch government: eradicating hunger and malnutrition; sustainable and inclusive growth of the agricultural sector and creating ecologically sustainable food systems. Within this broader policy framework, AgriProFocus supports the Dutch government pledge for increased coherence. More in particular the network empha

I just saw a very nice interactive essay that has been launched at the United Nations by agricultural coalition Farming First (AgriProFocus is a partner of Farming First), visualising the critical role that agriculture will play in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals currently being negotiated.
The interactive essay can be viewed HERE
“Agriculture is the common thread connecting the SDGs together,” comments Sue Carlson, Chair of the World Farmers Organisation’s Women’s Committee and Farming First spokesperson. “Agriculture isn’t only about ending hunger and malnutrition; it is relevant to a broad range of the development issues currently being discussed.”
The data builds a strong case for agriculture’s role in achieving many of the United Nations’ targets. The Farming First coalition is bringing this to the attention of negotiators and policymakers at the United Nations in New York, advocating for conti
